Went and did this trek about 2 weeks ago. Definately a 4WD minimum requirement (i.e. I wouldn't suggest an AWD after any wet weather). We started the trip by heading North then West. The trail from Mt Coree back to Brindabella and Curries Rd had some genuine muddy steep slopes that would have proved difficult, if not impossible, for anything less then a 4WD, especially if trying to go UP those hills.
All said and done, this was a great drive, stopped for lunch at Flea Ck and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to take and reasonably easy drive. Give yourself 5-6 hours to take it easy and enjoy.
We plan to do it again in summer and camp at Flea Ck.

My stomping ground - glad you liked it.

Though I disagree about your views on a 4wd minimum requirement even after rain. I have a "proper 4wd" but I also have a softroader as my daily drive and it has done all the main trails in the Brindabella NP in both wet and dry and performed well.

It is a nice area for an easy day run out of Canberra.

I'd say 98% of the trail was good for an AWD or softie, but had I chosen to go in the opposite direction to that which I did, I'd never have made it up the first part (Curries Rd) without a winch. As it was, decending was in Low Range with a bit of sliding. Never-the-less, I'd recommend this trek to everyone. The bonus is that Flea Ck is restricted to who can get there, hence a clean quite area to relax with the family.

I have already recommended it to friends and taking others out on it soon.

When I go up to Mt Coree (a Mazda 626 station wagon was parked 50m from the top last time I went there) I normally go up Curries Road in my Freelander with BFG ATs without too many problems. Used to be interesting in the previous HTs that I had and the traction control worked hard as did ABS, but changing over to ATs with low pressures improved things.

Did you go over to MacIntyres Hut - it can be interesting when wet.

I did get bogged in a big bog hole under the powelines in my Landrover 101FC a couple of weeks back and had to winch myself out but that was off a main trails and it had been cut up the week before after a visit by a well know 4wd magazine. This was definitely not a softroader area. (really not for any 4wd)

The rangers have really cleaned Flea Creek up and now has separate day visit and camping areas. However it is easy to get too (and out of) and in summer too many yobbos get in there causing trouble and making it uncomfortable for other visitors - my choice would be MacInTyres Hut.

No, haven't got to McIntyres hut yet. That will have to be one of the next trips me thinks. Headed back up Coree today via Piccidilly Circus and Two Sticks just to sus out the trails during rain. It was certainly wet and had a few patches of heavy rain. Coree was gail force winds so we sad in the car and had a drink and something to eat. The fog was bad the whole way (20 - 30m vis) and much worse up on the summit. The wife just wanted some photos of the youngen in some snow ... maybe next week :P

Oh, and it was Pabral Rd I meant that had the wicked muddy slopes. I'd do it again any day, but it reinforces that the idea that I want/need a winch ... just in case.
