I lived there for many years, left there about 12 years ago but still have daughter living there.

I found it a good place to live. Good schools, hospital, uni etc...... I am a keen diver and loved being able to dive the GBR regularly.

If not used to it you may find the summers very hot and humid, but once you have lived through a couple you get used to it. Winters are glorious.

Depends what work you might be looking for but is usually good with plenty of choice.

House prices have boomed over the last few years and finding rental places can be difficult.

Gidday,
I travel to Brownsville weekly and have lived there. I have the lobotomy scare to prove it.

Not a bad place just to many traffic lights for me, guess that's what happens in a growing city.

Many, many places to see out of Townsville and you should spend lots of time exploring them. One of the advantages is many of the places are not that far.

Summer can be a tad hot, you will probably get a bit peeved in summer when many of the storms just seem to follow the ranges and go round the back of Townsville.

They have a great rock pool to keep you away from the stingers in summer
Winter should suit you depending where you are from.

Have a good one

We live in Townsville, moved here from the Isa. We don't mind it, find it easy to get around. Has everything you could want here. Very easy to go anywhere and there is plenty to see and do as well. Some find the humidity to much but most houses are aircond. now and then there are the big shopping centres as well! Most people go up to paluma or chrystal creek in the heat to cool off, beautiful spot! I don't think you would find it hard to find work as there are a lot of industrial, mining and the defence force in town, tho you didn't mention if you needed that aspect of life still. So it's a thumbs up for Townsville from me.

were moving from adelaide. biggest thing my husband is worried about is school for children with special needs becasue our son has a learning disabiltiy (not a big one though)
yes we will need work, although we would prolly get a job to start with with east coast trafficcontrol. thats a family owned business.
we wlould be renting and not interested in buying. wed like to go on a 3 week trip in the "wet' season to see how wed fare but i know wed all be fine.
what are some "better" areas comepared to lower areas so i know where i am placed in the direction of things. in Adelaide we have the NOrthern subs thats classed as middle to lower incomes areas. elizabeth, davoren park and smithfield are for the very low income

Brownsville lol, anyhow I spent 18 years in Gawler and worked in Elizabeth. Heaps of time elsewhere Last summer in Yeppoon ( a fair way south of TVille but just as humid). I prefer the humidity than the hot dry dusty S.A weather. BUT not with out a air con esp where you sleep. We have been to Townsville many times and loved it. I can understand you wanting to see the wet. Sick of the drought I bet. We too have children with special needs. There are many schools there. My first Q to any of them is what experience with .... do you have and speak to the special needs teacher.
Big move good luck.

We ran away from Sydney 35 years ago and settled in Townsville. It has the advantage of great education facilities from pre school to University. Townsville is a great place to live though the humidity in December, January & February takes a little getting used to. During our time in North Queensland we also spent 5 years in Cairns where you have very wet wet season and wet dry season. No winter at all.
Townsville has some great suburbs to live in and some areas to avoid. As a retired Real Estate Agent I may be able to help you with suggestions. email me on peter.millar7@bigpond.com if you would like to ask questions.
We are presently on the road full time as my wife wanted to experience a colder winter than what we are used to. Some people say winter in Townsville is the Saturday night of the long weekend in June. This year Townsville may have missed out on winter.
Townsville is no longer Brownsville or Broken Hill by the sea. It is green, clean and going places.
Townsville is the only major city in Australia to have sufficient water reserves to double its population in 10 years and double that population in a further 10 years.

I spent two years living there and really enjoyed it. Yes Brownsville sums it up.
After the wet season in summer you see it all change to browwwwn!
We came from a big city and it was certainly a culture shock, but in a good way. High parking charges, tolls etc are a thing of the past.
You have to love hot weather and the humidity and not yearn for the changing of seasons- as you wont really see it.
One thing we found is that there isnt too much to do within say a 1 hr radius of Tville- if you want to have coffees and all that stuff. However, if you like camping - there are lots of places to explore.
I think Myer is coming soon, so you dont have to go to Cairns for a shopping fix. Shops and variety has changed a whole lot in last few years, so you can pretty much get everything.
What I enjoyed was that the Daintree etc, Whitsundays are all withing 3-5 hrs away- bliss.
Always lots of cheap flights to Brownsville .
Education wise - is pretty good. JCU adds a good mix of youth to the town. Along with the army contingent adds another dimension.
Negatives- Dengue Fever, constant heat, high aircon bills,

Some better areas would be Annandale, Castle Hill, Fairfield( new estate on the river), some parts of Riverside Gardens -right on the river though- not on the Freeway side), parts of Mudgeraaba on the river side, Belgian Gardens. All these areas very flat- except for Castle Hill.
Wet season is pretty exciting up there as when it rains it really rains. Parts of Railway Estate usually flood as do many other lower lying areas near the Ross River.
hope this helps

Gotta love cyclones, crocodiles, dengue fever, sweat, no daylight savings, and cowboy fanactics....other than that a good place to live LOL

A well serviced major city which one can always find something to do depending on their desires.
