powering a slide on camper while away from caravan parks

G'day , thinking of getting a slide on camper (that goes on a ute)
and would like to be able to power my laptop, tv, ps3 possibly microwave
and maybe reverce cycle aircon/heater, and lighting ...

I dont want a generator as i know they can make some noise,
so thinking of solar, and or possibly duel battery set up
id like to be able to use thse for a few days with out worrying about recharging all the time.. any ideas?

I'll be getting a unit with shower/toilet too, so i gather the shower, stove and fridge can run off gas, but can the fridge run another way too??

thanks any ideas appreciated

milo ,

You won't power all that lot from Solar -

If you ditch the Microwave and the Aircon you might just be able to do it -

If the fridge is 3-way use gas as 12 volt is very very demanding ...

If you want more info there is a solar Calculator available to download

from my website ( see below )

I'd probably use the microwave, aircon etc when at a cp..
but and have the gas for the fridge/stove/ hot water

could a laptop/tv and ps3 be run via 12 volt? and lights?

No problem to run tv lap top & ps3 lights etc. on solar if you set it up right.
But you should see if you like a slide on, before you buy, they make the vehicle handle quite different
good luck

As already said - forget running the microwave and aircon from battery. A 3 way fridge has the advantage of running on gas when you are stopped, but a 12V fridge is better provided you have the battery capacity. Everything else, lighting, laptop, charging phones, cameras, etc can be run from battery power. A dual battery system would be very desirable, and depending on the fridge one or two solar panels too. Starting to add up to serious $$$$. As already suggested, might be worthwhile starting in a small way and then expanding when you have experience with your rig and how you use it.

Suggest check out our blog Electricity for Camping on this site. This discusses in detail batteries, charging, usage, sizing, and lots of stuff which may be of direct relevance to what you're thinking of doing.
