Hi - does anyone have experience with a successful
home made awning for a roof rack? I did see a post about it in 2006 but can't find it now! Where is best to put it? Along the passenger side of the roof rack? Thanks in advance?

Get a cheap tarp of whatever size you want.
An appropriate length of 25 x 25 x 1.6 box section.
Bolt the box section to your roof rack on the outside edge. (whichever side you preffer. Do both if you want.)
Tec screw the tarp to the box through the eyes.
Role your tent poles up in the tarp when you roll it away against the box section & secure it with 2 bungee chords.
Should set you back about $35 plus tent poles, depending on the size of your tarp.
Weighs only a few kilos.
My tarp was 2.4 long x 2.2 wide & I used 2 poles on the side of a Nissan Patrol. It could have been longer & wider & still only used 2 poles.

Do as the previous poster said on the roofrack attachment then on the outer edge get a length of plastic pressure pipe about 30mm dia and tek screw the edge of the tarp to it.
drill a hole at each end of the pipe to take the metal pin on a tent pole, two ropes and pegs and its up.
