Hi guys
Maybe a silly question, but then again ...
I'm looking at getting a canvas roof rack bag for the cruiser. Looking on the
Southern Cross &
MSA websites, their bags are both 1200mm wide.
Our ARB roofrack is 1120mm wide, meaning these bags are too wide. Is the 80mm extra width of the bag likely to create any issues/problems?
The alternative is to have a bag made up, but I'm assuming that 'made to order' will cost more than 'off the shelf'.
If you have one of the newer
Southern Cross bags, what are your thoughts of them being extendable height wise (25mm to 45mm)?
Also looking at
In Front Camping who have a range of different sizes. I like how the flap over the zip goes all the way to the bottom of the bag, but am confused with their comments that the zip (only one zip puller?) runs along one 'long and two short sides' (meaning it opens to the side? and has a covered zip end across the front of the bag - allowing moisture to wick in while driving?). Also what is the quality of these bags like compared to
Southern Cross or the MSA bags?
many thanks in advance.
Ian

The 80mm extra won't matter at all.

Ian,
I think that as you fill the bag, the side will come in. However, if you only put alittle in then it will be even bigger! I recon the way to go is to fill it so it is smooth - less resistance - even having something to fill any extra space. Something inflatable?

We've used a bush
ranger brand for 7 odd years, there not bad as
well. I agree though. The extra width won't cause you much grief

Have a look at the Outback Campers bags as
well. They will custom make to any size. I've had three of them made to varying sizes now.
Cheers Mick

We have a
Southern Cross bag but have yet to use it.It looks great quality and being height adjustable looks as though it would be a bonus, no more flappy loose bags.

We have a custom made
Southern Cross roof bag and I don't think it cost much more (if any more) than the standard item. It was $355 from memory, about 2 years ago.

I have an MSA bag and I think it would be ok in your 1120mm roof rack. Not ideal but ok.
It is
well made - heavy duty rubber base and extra cover over the top to help with waterproofing. Had
mine in quite a bit of rain on its first trip and no problems.
I must admit I would probably appreciate the extra space in the
southern cross (on its high setting) but the MSA looked a touch stronger and more water/dust proof to me.

Like a canvas tent you will need to wet it thoroughly a few times so as to tighten up the seams. I also sprayed ours with a canvas waterproofing compound and it still leaked at the corners. Fortunately the only rain we copped was when we were only 30k's from
home.

Thanks guys
I will get a price on a custom built bag and then decide whether to go off the shelf or custom then.

Ian,
I have a infront roof bags and I am extremely happy with it.
The bag does open to the side but it is not a problem for me on my 100 series. I am sure you can order it with the zip on the two sides & rear but I have have had no water come in at all or dust. I went with the infront over the others because it had the flap that is velcroed all around which helps with keeping things dry & dust free. Also they are Aussie made.
Hope this helps

The MSA also has a flap which is velcroed all the way around.

mmmmm wish I had thought of side opening bag before i had one made. I think that would suit me better than end opening.
