Hi,
A friend of mine has a 1992 gq wagon 230kms 4.2 diesel.
This vehicle is having a problem at approximately 1500 rpm and over with a miss under load, if you back off it runs ok. Idles ok as well. Not much smoke either, seems to be starving for fuel in my opinion. All new fuel filters etc as well.
Any ideas on potential problem cause?
thanks for any help.
Alan.

Try cleaning the fire wire mesh filter located on the inlet to the fuel pump.

Cheers

My old GQ did the same, it will be injectors breaking down under load, how long is it since his injectors have been done? they should be done every 100000.

I will support the injectors breaking down theory.Mine did the same thing.

Does it run out of puff and run a little warm? If so get it to a diesel fuel sysltem specialist and have them check it out.

I had the GQ for about 8 years and never had a problem with the mesh basket. I am not sure the GQ had one. My GU gets cleaned out regularly.

Hi,
Thankyou for the suggestions put forward , we will start with the filter and go from there I think.
Judging from the rather average condition of the vehicle I doubt the injectors have ever been serviced. Maybe we could try some injector cleaner??? But my thinking is that they have done their share of duty at 230 km.
Thanks again.

The injectors on my GU done 208 thou before I changed them and even then they really didn't need doing just that I was doing so much else to improve performance so it was senseless to do it all unless the injectors were done too. I reckon the filter on the pump is a good starting point......much cheaper too hehehe.

Good luck,
Trevor.

It could also be a slight air leak somewhere in the fuel system. EG: when the fuel filter was changed recently, were the rubber O rings done too? If not, and there is even the slightest possibility of the system having an air indiscretion, then it will perform poorly under load.

For this reason I swear by the fitting of a electric lift pump....the closer to the tank the better. It will ensure a positive fuel delivery and save the injector pump from the arduous task of lifting the fuel as well as pressurising it and pumping through the injectors.

Hi,

Thankyou for further replies.

After much sweat, swearing and a day of fixing the GQ lives.

Cutting a long story short the long range tank had over a cupfull of crap n sludge in it which would not drain with out removal of the tank. Had to clean lines, filters etc.

It was a loooonnnngggg day.

Again thankyou to those who offered helpfull opinions.

Regards alan.
