Hi all,
Looking for the five must see spots in Northern NSW and Queensland. Will be travelling from mid May to the start of August.

Any ideas would be handy....

Matt,

Broomes Head would be one. Camp right on the beach with very sheltered water for the littlies. Also partial to Valla Beach near Nambucca, with long empty beaches and a creek as well.

Cheers,

Val

if you do go to broom head - go down to sandon river - about 10k of easy dirt - lovely camp there - not sure what the set up re fee's etc is as i have only driven down there for a look but certainly worth while. a bit further south have a look at red rock - very nice we spent easter there with our grandies... beach, creek, boardwalk in the national park... very good

Hi Matt,
We've lived on the north coast all our lives and there are some beautiful places to visit and see.
Minyon Falls Is worth a look and stay at Nightcap National Park Rummery Park near the top of the falls. We try and travel there every couple of years.r, even if its just for a day trip.
With two little ones, the walk to the bottom might be a strecth, but the veiw from the top is pretty good. Here are few pics of our last visit,

woody head camping groundat the southern end of the Bundjalung National Park, turn off the Pacific H/way at the Iluka turn off.
There is a passenger ferry that crosses the Clarence to Yamba from Iluka. Iluka has most things that you will. The camping ground is sheltered from the southerlies and is a great spot to camp in the colder months,

Evans Head is another great spot, the Silver Sand Caravan Park right on the river and beach.
Wooli & Minnie Water are another places that are great.
Darlington Park, Is a great family park,
Dave & Val mentioned some other top spots.
I think you'll find that you wont know where to start.
Hope this help and have fun, there is plenty to do.

Queen Mary falls is a great place just on the border. The condamine river run is perfect for the X-Trail.

Have you tried the Aussie X-trail site as well?

Australianxtrail.com.au great info their and also trip reports.

Don't know whether you are a beach, tourist or bush type of person.
As far as tremendous loacations Broken Head Caravan park between Byron Bay and Lennox Head is a low key gem.
Great base to explore Byron Bay/ Northern Rivers/ Tweed hinterland from.

IF you are going as far south as Coffs Harbour and like the bush, spend some time at Dorrigo & Bellingen (if weather is OK). Some of best National Parks, state forest driving and bushwalking even with kids I know of in northern NSW at Dorrigo and then there is Bellingen to keep mum happy. Substantially fewer crowds than further north as well.
Can't fault any of the above locations mentioned, might be a bit cold to stay overnight at Ebor/ Wattle Flat in winter, but fine to day visit

Broken Head is a top spot......... the in laws live there.

It's a "must see" to see what I have to endure when we visit. Mow this.... cut that tree down....rake those leafs..... your not doing it properly....... stop drinking so much...... are you going to sit down the shed all day.......

Still love 'em.........

Also St Helenas in the hills of Byron is a great spot... not sure about camping though. Belongil fileds is a good camp ground.

Redrock is a definite, especially good for young kids swimming, theres the river, a safe beach and the main beach is patrolled on weekends, all within 1 or 200 metres of the cpark.

Cheers Wayne

If you get to Coffs Harbour take the kids to the Pet Porpoise Pool.
Get to pat and kiss a dolphin. Not too dear either.

Rollingstone CP ( Nth of Townsville) is great too. Good kid friendly pool. Book a beachfront site , you wont be disappointed. The Paluma area is a good day trip from the C/P. Waterfalls and swimming holes to play in. Just watch the young'uns.

Hi Matt, You have been given some great suggestions so far & I am sure you will enjoy all those you choose to visit.

I'm a "dyed in the wool" New South Wales bloke, so cannot help you with any suggestions up Queensland way. I actually refuse to cross the border, but..........

In the far, far far very far north of NSW You MUST stop and explore the Mareeba area & it's surrounds. It is a wonderful place & in my opinion a must. As is Atherton & it's surrounds. They both offer a lot to see & do. If you are in the area of a place simply called "1770" & your budget permits you to do so, take a cruise out to Lady Musgrave Island, you will not be dissapointed.

Should you venture to the upper extremities of the far, far very far northern NSW area, call in to Cooktown!! It is Historic, very, very scenic, & has some inexpensive tourist attractions, the tourist info centre being one & well worth the visit as is the Museum. ( & it is not a boring Museum ) Just out of town, as you head back South, & off to the right ,very close to the highway, is a lagoon. It is not well advertised but has a board walk & in my opinion a magic place to visit & get close to nature. It's the sort of place your children will truly enjoy, & so will you. Best of all it's free!!

In the heart of this beautiful town their is a walkway along the waterfront, it offers much by way of scenery, our history , friendly locals to chat to & young blokes all along the way trying their luck with a fishing line & only to willing to share their lifes expeinces with you if you take the time to say "good day" to them. And overlooking the lot of this is a lookout that offers the best views that Australia can offer as well some more of our history itself.

Mission Beach is also a great place. There is an inexpensive Caravan Park run by the council right on the water front. A powered site Oct 09 was only $15 & there was a large area for tents & unpowerd sites. It's just a real nice relaxing place to be, & we always cherish the five days or so we stayed there.

Enjoy your travels in the far, far, very far Northern part of our great NSW State & safe travelling.

Sorry didn't realise you had so long and you meant all of Qld.

If you are prepared to wander back through inland Qld, consider.........
Lawn Hill in the western Gulf
The dinosaur museum out of Winton,
Qantas Museum & Stockmans Hall of Fame in Longreach,
across the range to Canarvon NP, probably the Gorge section.

There is more to Qld than the coast.
But whilst you are on the coast, you can easily spend 2 weeks around Cairns, Pt Douglas, Daintree, Atherton Tablelands.
