Hi All,

I have a 100 Series Toyota 4.5 Litre Landcruiser with about 145k on the clock and I think I have a leaky valve stem seal or seals. Symptons are some smoke from exhaust at start up in the morning or after taking off from an idle position of 5mins say . I am using about 1.5ltrs every 2-3months.

My question is does anyone know if these can be replaced without pulling the head and if so what cost would I be up for?
Has anyone experienced this problem

Thanks

Peter

My bro in law sold his 100 series recently, his was using even more than that. I think you are spot on with the diagnosis. He sold his as is I presume if you are keeping the vehicle a repair would be viable.

I believe that they can be done without rmoving the head.A air fitting is installed in the spark plug hole and air applied to hold up the valve while the spring is removed and seal replaced.

Hi Joy
Very common problem.
My 80 series 4.5 Petrol has the same symptoms as your 100.
The head has to come of to change the valve stem seals well thats what i was told from the cylinder head reconditioner.

I haven't had my seals replaced as yet. wait till the head gasket dies!

Try different engine oil Toyota recommend 15w/40 or 20w/50
Go for the 20w/50 a little heavier.

I use penrite hpr10 gas (15w/40) as i run lpg and found it very good less smoke
Also penrite hpr60 gas was good.
These oils formulated for lpg powered vehicles will still be ok if your not on lpg.

Rob

I only ever made one mistake
and that's when I thought I was wrong!

Hi Peter, I had the same problem with my previous 97 80 ser. cruiser. I had gas put on it at around 220,000 and it was smoking before I had it fitted. I reasoned, as I was on gas, that at least with the valve stem seals leaking a bit I was getting a little extra upper cylinder lub and so I didn't worry about it. Besides a little extra carbon in the combustion chamber might help to harden the valves and seats. Probably would not have but I felt better using that as a reason to leave it alone. Besides, I got a quote from Toyota to pull the head and do the job and was told it would be around $1200 but I was also advised that while the head was off I should get it done up. All up cost was going to be around $2000 so I didn't bother. Finished up wrapping it around a tree. Well and truly cheesed off about that.
Got a turbo diesel now, on gas as well, but still very fond of the 4.5 petrol.
Regards, Bruce.

you can either fill the head up with air or bend a screw driver into a J shape and do it that way, cheaper then trying to pump air into a head thats going to leak out when you pull of the valve stem seals!!!!

Good luck a days work there maybe!!!

hope you get it sorted.
