have I got this right?.........a 3 way fridge that is 12/240/gas is not a compressor fridge because it is relying on a heat exchanger?
therefore a gas fridge cannot be a compressor fridge
a 12/240 v fridge could be either compressor or not compressor fridge?
dumb question to some I suppose.......but would like to ger my head around this
thanks

bungarra, Yes, a 3 way fridge is not "always" a compressor fridge but usually.
A normal 3 way fridge uses either 12 volt,240 volt or gas to heat ammonia based liquid to provide cooling.
A gas fridge can never be a compressor fridge!!
A 12/240 volt fridge would only be a compressor fridge but could theoretically be 12 volt powered ammonia coolant fridge and a 240 volt compressor fridge but that would be stupid. A 12/240 volt fridge IS a compressor fridge.
Hope that makes sense.
Ian

Sorry to butt in but some Electrolux 12/240v are only Ammonia based fridges, So be careful about choosing. Barnray
Ps I have repaired one in a motorhome, but I'm no expert

Hi Bungarra,
Yes you are right on all counts!! the latter is like camping fridge's which work in the car and 240v and the 3 way are all element type fridges

3 way = 1. Gas flame
2. 240v heating element.
3. 12v heating element.
One of the 3 must be in use to provide heat for cooling to occur , best performance as above , 12v power draw excessive and least efficient of the 3.
12/240v is generally a compressor driven fridge ,
12/240v "cooler box" fridges use the " peltier " style of heat transfer , and most can also be used as a hot box , will drain battery in no time.
