We are heading over to KI after
easter and was wondering if anyone can suggest a few good spots to catch our own Marron.

A tricky one that. The best spots are on private property, you may be lucky and find a farmer that will let you access the water [creek] running through their property. Good luck. There are a few bridges dowwn the western end of the Island and you can technically fish directly underneath them, but again, technically you need to enter private property to get under them. Most of these bridges have fences each side of the
bridge, you can fish between the fences on each side. But so does everyone else. All the best.
Regards
Peter

Hi there. Half your luck!!! Marron isn't even naturally found in the wild on KI!! It's like 'finding' a nice Waygu fillet in a paddock, attached perhaps to a cow, and expecting to 'harvest' it.
But if you strike lucky, give us a Hoi, eh?

I heard they were introduced and have become a pest
- but then you hear lots of things

Hi There
I did research on KI on marron and have been over there a bit and have also caught heaps of marron on KI without going onto farmers property. Just bare in mind that properties start around 10-15m off the side of the road. We were over there about a year ago and caught about 4-5 nice big ones (around 250g+) and around 10 smaller ones (around 100g) in one night.
If you have the SA Tourist book on KI - go to the map in the front. The following roads that run from Playford Highway (the one that goes down the guts) to the north coast have streams running across them which you can see on the map - go down those roads...
-
Stokes Bay Road
- Turkey Lane Road
- Coopers Road
I can't remember if we caught them off
Stokes Bay road or Turkey Lane Road last time. Spots are hit and miss, sometimes you will catch heaps, other times nothing. Set the traps during the day and then leave them overnight - come back the next day. Marron like heaps of
shelter so pick spots which has heaps of reeds or snags. Doesn't matter if it is not that deep either - have caught them in a couple of feet of water. Opera House traps work
well and last time I went to the butcher in
Kingscote and asked for dog bones to put in them (got some fantastic lamb shanks and even debated about giving them to the marron!).
Yes marron are introduced to the island (around the 60s if I remember rightly) and are noxious therefore shouldn't be returned back into the creeks if you catch any. They are certainly not in the same category as carp though!
Good luck
Cheers
Tars
