Hi all, I have a 120 series D4D Prado, with only 14000 easy K's on the clock. I have just returned from a 1000K trip towing a Jayco offroad pop top, probably around 1.5 tonne I guess - no hard work but did some muddy roads with low level creek crossings. Anyway the prado has developed a noise best described as a 'vroom' sound under heavy acceleration - almost like a sucking sound when the turbo fires up. Toyota checked it today and could not find anything obvious, they believe the fan is just working harder but it makes this noise when the engine is cold also. Just had a look at the rubber housing under the bonnet that fits down around the top of the intercooler - wondering if this could this suck down some how. Toyota also suggested I take off the housing around the top of the radiator and rinse everything out - maybe mud stuck in the radiator causing it to heat up and the fan to kick up a gear - but the temp gauge hasn't moved? Has anyone had a similar experience or any idea's - thanks

Qldrrr,

The best place to ask this question is the Pradopoint forum www.pradopoint.com.

There is a section for 120 series Prado and within that a sub section for the diesel engine. If it is a common, known problem someone on that forum will be able to give you some information about it.

I had a similar sort of sucking noise with my Jackaroo (although it was petrol engine). It turned out to be a little rubber hose had slipped off its connector somewhere along the air intake between the cleaner and the manifold - I managed to find it fairly quickly. Just have a look around the engine for any hoses etc. that might have come off or started leaking.

Surely the techies at the dealership would have found that problem...... or would they?
