Hello all

can anyone help me? I've seen some tailormade insulating panels on a Nissan Patrol recently. They suction onto the windows and are silver in colour. The bloke said he got them from a QLD company but my internet searches have proved fruitless. They can be made for any 4wd apparently.

cheers

wasn't a silver Patrol by chance was it?
we have a member in our 4wd club with a silver Patrol who has them in his fourby, i asked him about them and he said same as you said, and just like you i couldn't find any info. on the net.
he said he'd have the receipt at home somewhere, i will try and get the name of the retailer again from him, and if successful post it up here for you. i want a set for the back before we hit the simpson later in the year.

Thanks rumpig. I think it was silver? I'm heading off in June to the centre and could do with 'em. The bloke who has them said it helps the fridge as well...doesn't cycle as much.

cheers

Or use a couple of silver or coloured windscreen sunshades - they can be cable tied at the top and fit behind the plastic trim on the wheel arch. Has worked for me for years and i now have nice shiny gold ones. rgds

That's what I did too - just cut them to size/shape of your windows. I made little plastic brackets the fitted between the window glass and the plastic trim so I didn't need cable ties.

If you dont have much luck tracking down the company (or they are very expensive), you can always use the windscreen sunscreens that are silver on one side and have some insulating thickness to them. get the smallest ones available and because the are a Constantina style sunscreen, you dont open them out fully and simply tape the to the required size, not as nicely fitted I know, but will do the job.

Visit clark rubber, they have I think three different types, foam core, air core and one other. they are silver and about five mm thick, buy by the mtr. They have two sizes of clear suction cups wth a small knob. Cut a hole with a small wad punch push the knob through the hole and you should know the rest. My son in law did it and has excellent results.

Probably not - window tint is not allowed to exceed a certain reflective level, I'd suggest that silver sunshades would exceed the limit.

I drove around with them in the rear side windows for a few months and nothing was ever said.

It depends on whether you're using them when parked or driving.

I've never heard of any problems with the reflective windscreen covers while parked.

True Mike, but I thought the intention of the cargo area shades was to leave them in while driving...

It may not be an issue because the reflective surface is broken up by the dimples in the sunshade (ie. it's not just one reflective panel like a mirror) - surely they can't be any worse than a polished alloy bullbar! :-)

Putting the screen on the outside makes a difference in keeping the inside cool.

I've been experimenting with a silver emergency blanket held in place with supermagnets. They're VERY thin and won't last long, but they're cheap.

Also the ones designed to go on the inside of windscreens work well on the outside.

Last week I saw Sisalkraft being used - silver covered bituminous paper insulation for use on buildings. Comes in a long roll, just cut to size and shape - again I'll use supermagnets to hold it in place.

Really powerful magnets - you will injure your fingers if you're not extremely careful when bringing them together.

I got them from a computer market - they come from dismantled harddrives.

I'm sure there are other sources.

The company is called Solar Screen, in QLD.
The screen is the typical silver sunscreen stuff, but the inside of it is padded.
They are extremely well made with perfect fit on every window.
The guy that makes them is easy to talk to on the phone and delivers on his promise of prompt delivery.
We have had ours on the windows in the cargo area of our Patrol for over two years now, have never taken them off.
And yes they make a great difference for the poor fridge stuck in the back.
No affiliation, just a very happy customer. You can find his add in 4wd action up towards the back section

Plenty of ideas!
I've used the thicker roofing insulation (off the roll at Bunnings), and cut it to the shape of the window and used sticky velcro dots to hold it on.
