G'day all

Independent or axle suspension? Planning to buy a van, off road if I can afford it. Is it necessary to go for independent suspension. There seem to be an equal number of each about. What is your experience please?

Cheers

For off road I would lean towards independent suspension as this generally means you don't have an axle dragging along the ground when travelling over tracks that have a high centre ridge running along them. Your next question may be what sort of independent suspension and that is something I don't have a clear understanding of.

What sort of use do you have in mind?

If only black top towing then standard springs may well be quite satisfactory, however I would definitely insist on a suspension with shock absorbers or rebound dampers. After towing a camper without shocks then going independent with shocks I would never go back.

Almost all independent suspensions come standard with shocks.

I'm not sure about the theory of caravan/trailer axles dragging on centre humps, I just can't see how they are going to be any lower than the tow vehicles diff.

My apologies! Should have read your post more carefully.
You did say an "off road" van should you be able to afford it.

Most definitely independent suspension. What type would be influenced by the size of your intended van.

We are more than happy with the Control Rider suspension on a 15' Evernew which is of course, a single axle.

Hi,

Does of road mean of the bitumen or rock hopping. Our Evernew is fitted with Simplicity suspension which is load bearing independent suspension which does not require shockers. If I remember correctly 4 years ago this (2.5ton) setup was $2500 over the standard suspension. We have travelled many an outback road with no problems. Suggest you ask your proposed van builder. Also check out Evernew as they specialize in vans for 4x4's. and you will get the right advice.

Cheers

In my opinion the most important issue is to have load sharing suspension if you are getting tandem axles.
