I have recently purchased a pathfinder and would really like some advice from people in the know that frequent this forum.
I can seee the breadth of knowledge on here is nothing short of amazing.

My queries are
1. These "new" headlight bulbs made by Phillips and "others" that claim to produce far better light than the standard bulbs (mine are H4 60/55) are they all they are cracked up to be. More power/ligt would mean the lens and the like would fail at an earlier rate would it not?.
They are not expensive at around $40-00 for the pair, i suggest it may be worth a try.. has anyone used them to date.

2. Waht would people suggest for the attachment of a shade to the side of teh car (above the passenger and side doors etc). I have a roofrack fitted and a Thule basket attached to teh roof but has anyone got any idaes that would assist with the attachment of a shade to the car. I am thinking of "soemhow" attaching the shade to the vehicle and uusing 2 poles and soem ropes to the "other end".... the simpler the better.

3. How does one keep the sand out of the camper trailer when in use on the beadch?. I have been advised that shadedcloth is graet but does this not just "sink" into teh sand and defeat the purpose and allow the sand to enter the trailer... just takes a little longer , like until the shadedcloth "sinks"..??

Sheeet if that is not enough.... thanks so kindly in advance to anyone that takes the time to respond to me, i am quite in experienced BUT am not too afraid to ask a question or 2 / 3 .

Cheers

i use the h4 headlight bulbs and got a huge improvement and if it lasts as long as a normal globe it is worth it (8 months to date) light means safety!

shade cloth works a treat on sand allowing no sand to come up but most to seep through u can still sweep it.
sew all four sides and sew in 4 or 8 reinforced holes for pegs

Ive used the snowy mountain rug co ones. $195 last time I checked, BUT... You need a roofrack.

We had a club open day on weekend, and some blokes had had canvas tarps made up to mount on the open rear doors of the GQ.. BRILLIANT, and no need for a parachute.

Toonfish,

Thansk so much for taht prompt reply.
The headlight bulbs are the go and the shadecloth sounds like a greatr idea.
Those Finke races are legendary ... the 520 wouold not outpace the 380 but them 4 bangers are great motors though... 9000 bush Kms and still going strong.. electric start too.

Cheers

KTM, welcome.

I haven't bothered with the lights on the Pathy as I think they are quite adequate for suburbia. We try to ensure we are set and/or back at camp before dark so don't really need extra light. That said, I run a pair of 150w aux lights for the long night hauls.

You'll see for my "members' rig" details, I have a campertrailer too (our floor measures 26' x 18 '. I can attest to shadecloth as the ultimate flooring but make sure you get the middle weight or heavier. We also have a small door mat for the final "foot wipe" before stepping into the sleeping quarters. We spent 10 days on Fraser Island and didn't have to sweep the floor until pack-up. The shade cloth does not "sink" into the sand. We chose a light colour ("sand" I think it was called, as this promotes great light reflection in what can otherwise be a dark space, but the common green would probably hide the dirt better. Make sure you have enough to extend a couple of feet forward of your "front door" as the creates a great "platform" to wipe feet, remove dirty shoes etc. You can see a few shots of our set-up on our website

There are many solutions to the "pull out" shade Issue and a few earlier threads on this forum cover it. It seems most cities have at least one commercial manufacturer that folk are willing to recommend and there are a number of "do it yourself" solutions. Where are you located?

Rohan K,

Now that is what i call an informed site .

CAnnot thanks yopu enough.
I never knew there were so many Pathy Owner's out there... pity about the fuel economy though, much the same with all V6 Engines i would assume.

What about a 3.0 Litre Turbo DIesel.... wouldn't that ne nice??

I'd imagine those of us keen to actually use the Pathy for 4x4 would be a very small minority, but clearly there is a good following. Its just a pity the after-market sector don't consider us a big enough market.

There are reports from other (non-Nissan) V6 owners of better economy, but I think all V6 4x4's are much-of-a-muchness.

I understand this is the last year of the Pathy model as we know it, so perhaps Nissan Australia will wake up and give us a mid-sized TD replacement. The yanks also get a 178 kw petrol version and a supercharged version. Have a look herefor some interesting info on what O/S owners are doing.Smile, you're on ExplorOz

KTM, I cant comment about the other issues but the lights is a bug bear with me.

I have used IPF 145/90 h4 globes and they cost about $53 each, but ARB assure they last long enough to justify the cost. Mine lasted a few years and while that was ok, I still dont think it was cost effective. Plus the additional load on the alternator and the cost of upgrading the wiring loom.

So I went down to a cheap 100/90 h4 for a trial and they were great, not a heap of loss of light and very cheap, but they dont last.

So finally went to the Narva Plus 50, thinking they were up around the 100/90 light output and no more load on the alternator!! Still rather expensive and should last.

I found the light no better at all from the standard 60/55 that I replaced!! The are twice as expensicve and both made by Phillips, so longetivity should be the same! Really I think they are a waste of money and should have just stayed with a good quality 100/90!

FYI the term H4 is just the type ie configuration of the bulb, shape of base and the number of elements inside. It doesnt state any difference to type of H4. All the different types of globes are H4, just different wattages and brands, these are the standard bulbs for most single headlamp Jap cars. Twins may use two H3 etc!!
Matt.
