Robyn,
recent trip back from SA. Fully laden LX470 (five people, four cases of wine, luggage) Between Renmark and Narrandera sat on 124 kph and got 14.7 L/110km. I choose not to measure around town because its too depressing (around 20). It is also very much worse when towing (maybe 25). The addition of an extra cog may help the cruiser, but I expect that the LX 470 would be pretty indicative of what you should expect.Bob

I have a 2003 Auto GLX my consumption has ranged from 13.1 to a worst of 20.2 . The 13.1 was mainly highway with a bit of city and a bit of paddock driving. the 20.2 was towing a horse float (Heavy weight but driving reasonably gently). Around town if you are gentle I seem to get 16 ish , when my wife drives 18/19 ......(draw your own conclusion) I previously had a v6 pathfinder and am definately finding the cruiser lighter on fuel.

Pathfinder great mid size vehicle to drive leaves old Prado Challanger etc for dead.....However appaling fuel economy and small petrol tank really annoy the hell out of you after a while.

Robyn those figures given to you sound honest. They make me wonder why anybody who has a 4wd chooses petrol as when you use it for towing, around town or off road it becomes so thirsty - as Bob said it's too depressing to calculate around town. I have a petrol Prado and a TD Prado. The TD varies between 10.5 highway, 12 around town and 13 towing. The petrol is 13.5highway, 16 city driving and up to 20 towing. Needless to say all future vehicles will be TD!

Thankyou Martin, Looking for a vehicle is depressing in its self! The V8 Landcruiser, although it will do the towing and be very comfortable on our planned trip, it may just be too thirsty for the long time use. The T/D Landcruiser is just too dear - new - may have to look at one a few years old or perhaps the T/D Prado, we had a quick look on the weekend at the Prado and we liked it, Our only concern was would it tow well at the max load. Also a small problem of where to put the bike rack! - Our ccaravan has the spare on the back also!!

The reason for the V8 is as many would guess is the PRICE. Would take a fair while to use the ten grand extra Toyota charge for the TD in fuel and the extra services that need to be paid for during the warranty period. Incidently was very interested to note that in the U.K. The Landcruiser 100 series( known as Landcruiser Amazon over there and only available specced up to Saharaish standard as they call the Prado the landcrusier)Turbo Diesel is listed cheaper than V8 petrol ...whats that all about.
