From memory of the other week,
There are some "P" bays which allow 24hr camping along there.
Make sure you are there by 4pm or they get pretty packed.
Dont camp downwind of the long drops.

A good camp opposite the Bungle Bungle gates and another couple between Fitzroy crossing and Halls Creek.
Do not stay in Halls Creek especially near the weekend.
Agree with others that the toilets often need a 'mask' to enter!

We will be passing through these towns as part of our lap over the next couple of months - can you give me some more info on the dangers of staying near or at Halls Creek???? We are travelling with 2 young children and a caravan and would like as much info as possible about any dangers we should be aware of....

We are from NSW and never been up at the NT ever so havent heard much in that regard....

Please fill us in

Halls Creek seems Ok nowdays.

I had been told to drive straight through and to stop only for fuel. So I was terrified when we ended up having car troubles and having to spend time there with our two kids recently.

But we saw no trouble at all. There was a very high police presence. I have never seen so many police in such a small place.

There were aboriginals sitting around under trees midning there own business as is common in all the towns in the area but none were drunk or unruly. We saw violent, drunken aboriginals in Kununurra and Broome but none at all in Halls Creek, which I believe used to be the worst town for this.

gidday

Several Kimberley towns, including Halls Creek, have restrictions on the sale of wine, spirits and full strength beer. Since the restrictions police have reported a big drop in the amount of alcohol related crime and violence.

Sounds like a good thing. Maybe they should try it in some parts of the capital cities if what we see on the nightly news is a guide.

Cheers

When there in April we stayed at the caravan pk and it was ok. It was a Thurday night so pension night and a bit rowdy on the streets and down at the pub. Noise died down by 10pm. Abbo's must of all passed out together....

Jock,

Mary Pool Rest Area is about 180km from Fitzroy Crossing - 110 Halls Creek. It's well off the road, shady, toilets, bins etc but extremely popular. It's a large area though so plenty of room.

Leycesters Rest Area (Used to be Ord River Rest Area) is about 100kms from Halls Creek - 62kms from Warmun. Several tracks lead from main area to camp sites.

Spring Creek Rest Area is almost opposite the turn off into the Bungle Bungles. There are shady campsites beside the water and its well away from the road. Very popular for people doing day trips in to the Bungle Bungles and leaving their vans.

Between Doon Doon and the Victoria Highway intersection near a sign post for Scenic Look Out a road runs parallel to the highway for several kms. Its a loop road so there are two turn offs. Pass the look out on the right, continue driving until Telstra buildings on right then take a left on a track ... about 500metres down the track there are some nice clearings for camp spots in a valley.

We've camped at Spring Creek and had lunch stops at Leycesters and Mary Pool....all of them are detailed on a website www.kimberleyaustralia.com

Hope this is some help to you

Viv

I camped recently at both the Spring Creek and Marys Pool rest areas. Both were nice with Marys Pool being the better of the 2. Marys Pool has a new toilet block with 3 semi flushing toilets. They were spotlessly clean when we were there.

Jock,

I pretty much agree with the above comments & will add another one for an overnight stay, Ellendale about 90km west of Fitzroy Crossing. A small area but ok for overnight. As previously said if you are free camping, particularly between now & the end of August) get in early as they fill up quickly.

Last year I stayed one night at the Caravan Park in Halls Creek & found it to be ok.

John
just crusin & smelling the flowers

1. At Halls Creek (Is he really lost?)
2. East of Cameron Cnr

Hi,
I will let you know that I now live in Derby and when Halls creek and Fitzroy is mentioned up this way it is all POSITIVE due to the alcohol restrictions, so if you are thinking of travelling up this way apparently it is 100% on what it has been. Again thanks for the tips I’m off on Saturday….

Coincidentally I was camped next to the OIC Halls Creek police last week at Bells Gorge.

He told me that in his opinion the grog ban was an outstanding success as the incidence of wife bashing had reduced from 10 a week to less than one.

We stayed there about 6 weeks ago and aside form a very noisy disco at the pub on friday night , it was excellent.

BTW the supermarket in Fitzroy Crossing burned down last week, some say as payback for the grog ban there.

Was there last week. The local BP servo is busy now that the supermarket is gone. Ellensdale rest spot is small on a hill and close to the road, i kept going was going to try and get to Mary pool but was getting dark and it is another 180kms so ended up at fitzroy crossing lodge. That was good. Checked Mary pool out the next day looked ok as said above. Only thing is the road works happening right there before the bridge. Hope this helps. I guess you know about the 10kms of road works into derby:)
