It is that time of year again when the insurance renewal has come in the mail. Can anyone recommend a GOOD insurance company that will cover a modified 4WD, preferably to included off road use as well? I know that this may be a tall ask, but hopefully there is one out there.

Morning,
What do you mean by Modified?
Non standard engine, huge lift kit, oversize tyres? It that what you want insured? Because if it is engineered approved and road worthy I believe most will if you disclose everything. If you mean just accessories, all will insure you for a price. ;)

'to included off road use' can mean many things, Not all, but a lot of insurance companies insure you if it is a marked track or road, like fire trails and the like.
Best bet would be to ring a few and put to them what you have modified on your 4by and where you intend to take it. they'll soon enough tell you if they will cover it.

What do you mean cover off road as well ? 4WDs are off road vehicles , if your insurance company wont cover them off road then you are in the wrong insurance company . I have an agreed value for my troopy which includes all accessories .

As indicated in the previous response, most insurance companies will issue cover for the ‘usual’ modifications providing they meet required laws etc.

When it comes down to where you are covered; this always seems to be an area of contention for many. Comprehensive insurance is as it suggests and you are normally covered for anywhere you are legally entitled to be. That could be a major freeway, outback track, crossing the Simpson Desert, or washed down a creek on Cape York.

They key is that you should check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) issued by the company. That is the definitive document and the company must state what they will and won’t cover you for in that document. If it isn’t excluded, you can reasonably expect it is included.

Often confusion arises when ringing a call centre and putting a half dozen off-road scenarios to the person on the other end of the phone; it can become all too hard and usually ends up in dissatisfaction on your part. Best to read the PDS on-line, as it already has all the answers.

Importantly, the more you ask an insurance company to define the risk it is covering, the less coverage you will actually end up with.

If you vehicle is highly modified you would be best talking to TCIS Insurance brokers, or the like, as they specialise in placing that type of business with insurance companies.

Good luck…

Try Affinity insurance brokers.

A full disclosure on your part is as important as theirs.

TCIS is the 4WD NSW & ACT Association preferred insurer.

TCIS web page

They insure all modified 4WD's and cover all off road travel and will also include some events.
The insurance also covers personal items, camera's video equipment, GPS's etc.
Off road accident recovery appears to be covered as well.

However you pay for what you get.....

Some insurance will cover off road on Gazetted tracks, few cover all the items that TCIS do.

I'm insured with AAMI, covers 90% of what I need, but my vehicle is not highly modified and I tend to tour more nowadays.

Note: TCIS official ANFWDC National Insurance Broker for the members of all 4 wheel drive clubs.

Shannons. over 20 years as a customer and never had an issue. I have 4x4, family car and modified custom classic on the same policy. No dramas. Very satisfied.
