I bought one back in July 3.0TD SE. I love it, it is easy to drive and has plenty of go. I didn't buy it to go bush, I have a 4th kid due soon and couldn't face dring a tarago or zafira. Also I work on a farm so it matches the image. To justify myself I do drive down a gravel raod everyday.

Mine is suffering from dud injector seals so it blows a bit of smoke on start-up, I am told this is about $400 for holden to fix, special tool required.

I am getting just under 13L/100km which is not too good, I basically only drive on the open road.

Parts can be frightful, Isuzu air filter $70+, I bought a unifilter.
Ryco/Delco make both oil filters now and the fuel filter I didn't ask holden for thier price.

Do a search on this forum for Jackaroo, there is a fair bit of chatter on them.

The injector seals is a definate issue with this vehicle and can lead to engine death, cos oil doesn't compress quite as well as air/fuel mixtures.

As a side, the key costs about $400 to replace/reprogram and controls the immobiliser. The remote beeper is for C/L only abd holden want $450+ but the ones on e-bay from the states for this model Trooper work fine.

Oil quality but far more important is the grade.

I have a friend who is the service manager for a Holden dealership, and he states that hard starting was the reason for two bateries in the later models. With the wrong oil grade the injectors will not crack, and so no start.

You should be aware, that the Jackeroo is finished every where, and so parts may get more expensive, and maybe harder to get.

There is a rumour that someone has bought all the tooling, and is going to make them in Thailand.

He also states they are a good car, no serious vices, parts however are expensive.

Presume yours is a 3.0 and not the prior 3.1 litre ? (the 3.0 came in in 98 ! Huge diff in technology between these donks - you would want the 3.0 at 118kw !!).Yep - search for Jack info - there is quite a bit here - re the fuel filter - that is the cheapest of the lot ! Well under $20 - very reasonable at Holden's - but the ONLY reasonable thing about Holden servicing. I have moved to the Unifilter system for air (very good - no probs - clean it every couple of months). Ryco Z600 for main oil and Z79a for the second oil fliter will save you some $. If the donk blows (and any make can of course) you would be up for big $ - get a pro report for safety (head and block on the 3.0 CANNOT be machined !). Only snag is they don't get much feedback on the inside of the diesel - too hard to access.Get me outa these suburbs !

I have a 1/99 TD and I think its a great truck.
It is a bitch to start on cold (below say 5 degrees) mornings but thats the only thing I have against them.
I also get 12 to 13 Lper100km, does get a little lower on the open road.
As for parts being expensive, I don't really know, I can't imagine a 3L TD GU patrol being much cheaper.
And the new pajero and 100 series TDs are the only turbos you won't be able to beat if you line them up at the lights.

I am also a Jackaroo TD auto se owne[3 mths, 80k] 1st reg 2/2/00., 11/99 manufacture. A great vehicle in my opinion, and especially value for money compared to Prado which was my other choice. Some say they look old fashioned but I like their no nonsense looks. Anyway, they say beauty is in the eyes etc....
About parts, I have sourced some filters that may be of interest to the forum.The prices are as follows
Oil main- $16.50
Oil secondary-$5.50
Fuel filter- $16.50
Air filter- $30.00
Anyway, I had them shipped from Sydney to Brisbane for $8.95 so I've bought a set and will fit next change. Seems like a good discount and they are cheap enough to cut down change intervals if necessary without breaking the bank.If there is interest I will post the address. Also I am looking for a service manual.

Only comment that I could add to all of above is that they are generally regarded as the poor mans 4wd. I'm not sure if this comes from the very old and cheap ones but it's probably not a great image to buy into as it affects resale value greatly. The fact that they are being discontinued soon is also a concern .... would anyone buy a P76 now??

Hi there, My dec 98 Jacko Turbo diesel has now done 110,000 km., great to drive with plenty of power, rarely need to drop out of overdrive to pass anything, and returns 11.6 litres/100 on average. With camper trailer this increases to 12.5 and if the roof rack is also fitted it again increases to about 13.5, so most times I leave the rack home. Still leaves Patrols and Cruisers for dead! Some of them suffered a slight whine in overdrive which Holdens maintained they could not do anything about, mine is now a bit worse but still only noticeable under 80km/hr. When it's time to change the air filter fit a Finer Filter and save big dollars, also carry a spare band and take it with you on long dusty treks, only a few minutes to change and you will be amazed at the amount of muck it keeps out of your engine. The transfer box hangs a bit low even though it is well guarded, care is needed on rocky sections. When it's time for a tyre change go to 245.75R 16 instead of 70 R16, they are cheaper and give a bit more ground clearance; speedo will be out about 5%. Happy Jackarooing.
