Hi all. I will be towing a camper trailer From Alice Springs down through Finke to Oodnadatta in early October. What are the chances of the Finke River crossing into Finke being too high to safely cross? Any other nasty crossings?

Hi
When i went they way along the old Gahn in July 05 you could have driven an old ford or commodore along the track as do the local inhabitants.
I to was concerned about the Fink river crossing but dry as, all depends on the weather at the time.
Allot corrugated sections and a few wash out's but not real bad.
The one big problem is the old railway spikes littered along the track,
and there's lots of them sticking up at all angles to catch you.

Rob.

I only ever made one mistake
and that's when I thought I was wrong!

Will try and upload a photo.

Thanks for your input. Looks easy at the times you both went. Was specifically looking for October though.

Gday,
Its quite possible to get rain around October. From around September onwards is about when the chance of rain starts, so your chances of getting stopped are possible but unlikely. Weather here at the moment is like the rest of the country and pretty hard to predict.
When the Finke comes down around there, its "usually" only unpassable for a few days, so the likelyhood of that being the day your going through is very unlikely. You will know from Alice before you leave if its flowing and could change plans and head down through Kulgera.

Cheers

Hi just got back from doing a trip ( june 09) down from alice through Maryvale and along the old Ghan to Oodnadatta.
Tracks were corrigated and lots of spikes on the old line. We had four vehicles and one camper trailer go through with only one puncture and one blow out all on the same vehicle.
Finke was dry as a bone when we went through but as previously stated check when in Alice.
A fantastic trip, you will enjoy it.
cheers
