Good morning folks,
Does anyone have any ideas on how to instal a UHF radio into a 2004 Gu wagon?
The wireing and aerial etc are no probs but the location of the main unit has me stuffed.
I like the look of the GME range in particular the TX 3220 and TX 3420.
I could bolt the 3220 to the passangers side of the transmission tunnel but would like a neater and more permanent looking job.
Any ideas would be great.
Thanks Nifty.

Nifty, mine is installed above the sun glass holder in the overhead console. small two piece unit, the head piece screwed to the console. The main unit is nicely fitted above the console, out of sight. Let me know if you want pics.

I have my ICOM 400 installed in an Outback roof console.

If you are looking at any of the remote head options, consider where the speaker will end up, and whether you will be able to hear it.

lots of options if you go with the remote head units...

cheers

The main unit is between the roof lining and the roof, if you pull the console down you will see plenty of room to fit everything. Power and aerial are run up the "A"pillars, one each side, the mike cord has been shortened and can be used in the clipped position shown, no need to remove it to talk. No external speaker, I found it quite loud enough, easy to fit one if needed, I was going to mount one between the two lights, flush with the console. Hope this helps, if not, I can pull it apart tomorrow and take some more pics. Image Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be Found

Nifty, I had my 27meg cb sitting on the dash of my 1999 and my current 2003 GU, in the middle. They are quite large compared to a UHF and i had 25mm squares of double sided tape attaching it to the dash top. The dash is uneven with contours so you just add more tape squares to the low corners. it really is strong and stayed there for years until i pulled it out.. dont use the bracket, just stick the corners of the unit.. Michael, from memory it is cable tied in place. Fits very snugly in place.

John, I just bought a new GME remote head $365 with a fairly ordinary antenna for $365.00. I will give that a go. Michael

GME sell a DIN mounting kit, which fits in an existing DIN slot if available. Im not familiar with patrols, however many vehicles have a spare slot with a plastic tray in it which can be utilised. Perhaps yours does?

Prestige communications have them on sale at the moment for under $30. Uses existing screw holes, looks neat and is purpose made. Currently doing one on a friends Jackaroo and will look neat.

Here is how i have mine -- not as pretty as some of the others - but its practical as you can change channels easy whilst on the road - i have the hand piece just floating around near the gear stick - easy to grab and drop rather than on the mic hook

and it does not get in the way for the passenger even though it looks like it would ....

I thought about this for a long time, mine was on the transmission tunnel for a while.
After having the patrol for 18 months I got sick of the stereo system, we don't listen to tapes and CDs are not so good on rough roads so we upgraded the stereo to one which could take a USB stick with MP3/WMA on it.
The new one was single din which left a space to fit a GME 3400, a 3200 or 3220 would fit fine with the din mounting kit, I have fitted 1 to our other patrol and a John Deere

the 3400 was a nice fit (ok, maybe a couple of mm too narrow) under the stereo.

I got a overhead center console and mounted it up in there. Plenty of storage for other things as well. No exposed wires and it looks tidy and like it's factory standard
