Is there a way of downloading google maps to use when without internet access on OziExplorer?
I am presuming it must be impossible (vector maps, variable detail with scale, copyright legalities etc)
I had thought of stitching screen captures for small areas of interest, but way too tedious to do anything bigger.

I can be done.

However it requires some programming knowledge.

I have done this for the in vehicle pc running linux and gpsdrive.

Under windows would possibly be more difficult due to the lack of some of the software used.

More details here.

Thanks for the reply Rossc0, I do use Ubuntu, but the scripting is beyond my skills I'm afraid.
I might quizz some of my friends to see if they could do it for me.

Forgot to say.

With maps 1280x1024pixels and zoom 13 there are >35000 maps for Australia.

You would still have to calibrate the maps for ozi but it would be possible to do this automatically with the scripts.

Hi Arthur,

Please sign up to the gpsdrive mailing list.

As far as I can tell no one is using 64bit Ubuntu and it would be helpful for development purposes to know of your success or otherwise.

I have been developing some of the parts of gpsdrive, routing in particular (not yet in the release version). Will be shortly after the next release end of this month or at the latest end of April.

Free is always good especially when it's things like mapping and gps software.

Check also the gpsdrive wiki for comprehensive installation instructions.

MM me here if you need any other assistance with it.

Cheers

There is software available for free called NONIMap. It allows download of clips from Goggle earth, and also produces the MAP file that OziE needs. I have tried it and it works OK, but believe if you do too much then GoogleMaps will stop you using a particular address.

There is mapping software developed just to do this and you can download it free.

Here is the catch - I cannot remember the name, but I am sure someone this arvo will give you the details. If not, I will find it for you tonight.

bgreeni: thanks for the info on NONIMap, will explore that a bit further too.

What a great site, question to answer in less than 2 hours.

HI , i do it ----- You have to own a copy of google earth pro so that you can save maps in the premium section

then you just calibrate the saved maps as needed - once you do one or 2 maps its really not that hard to do , just time consuming

if you need more help let me know

As said GPmapmaker does it fine for free.
I find zoom level 13 with a map of 1 degree lat and long or zoom 14 with half a degree.
Creates the map(calibration file) for you.
Google will only lock you out if you download multiple satellite images.

"As said" not "as I said".
I was agreeing with a post from Mikee5 above.

Google earth pro is not needed. Calibration of the downloaded maps is not needed.

Feel free to add any options you like and have as many last says as you need.

Sorry I upset you but facts are facts.

I have just downloaded and tried GMapMaker, but at the moment I can only get it to download blank files.
I don't get locked out if I use the proxy server in the settings.
I have sent some screenshots to the author to see if I can get any help there.

Be aware that the lat entry has to be negative for southern hemisphere eg "top left corner -28 151" for southern Qld

Could be right. Works ok at zoom level 4 but not above.

It has had problems previously when somwething has changed at google requiring changes to gpmapmaker.

We'll have to wait and see what the author has to say.

OK, I have given up on GMapMaker, having found about an alternative program from a GPS site.

8<-------------------------------------
There is a free program that will take Google maps (and satellite
images) and prepare them for use with Ozi. It is particularly useful
for getting very detailed street maps of the US, Canada, and, maybe,
parts of Mexico.

The program automatically stitches map segments together as needed and
it prepares the necessary .map file. So far, the maps I have used have
been dead accurate for calibration.

The program is called GoogleMV, and it is available at the following
address: http://www.silber2004.narod.ru/GoogleMV1.zip (this is the
download address). The program is a stand-alone that does not require
installation. It includes a ReadMe file in English.
8<----------------------------------------------

It is a free standing program (does not install) and once I had it in English it was fairly easy to use.
I had to change some of the radio buttons to get info from the web rather than google cache.
In preview I went to some known locations I had been looking at in GE and was very surprised to get much better detail.
At the moment I am downloading the whole of Tasmania at maximum zoom in google map terrain view. It is going to be HUGE, maybe 20GB and my download speed has been choked, so it will take a long time.
Guess I should not have been so ambitious, but a couple of samples I tried worked perfectly in Ozi, and I got enthusiastic.

I use Stitchmaps Pro which doesn't seem to have problems with Google locking out access.

With access to Ozi calibrated data required at short notice, i spent the extra for a reliable alternative to some of the other programs.

The only problems which can dealt with relatively easily is the "windows aero" profile issue in Vista, and the disabling of the screensaver before capturing numerous tiles.

It may well be worth the $ for the time saved for me too.

I bought Stitchmaps Pro (about $70) and am not very happy with it.
I can't get good zoom levels, and I get glitches on the maps in the form of misplaced tiles. i.e. the Frazer Is beach has a huge step in it.
I will persevere over Easter with some more downloads, and if still not happy will try for a refund.
I have had varying success with GoogleMV, I down loaded (it took hours) 1 degree tiles of the Canning Stock route, both in map view and satellite photo at zoom level 14.
Trying to do the same for an area south of Yamba worked ok for the map at zoom 14, but not the photos. Zoom 14 is about 1.5cm map to 1km on the ground, enough detail for town streets and also shows bush tracks.
I did receive a reply from the author of GMapmaker, it is below.
8<--------------------------------------------------
Due to a lack of time, development has been stopped for now. You can have a look at http://www.mgmaps.com/cache/ , they have some tweaked and bugfixed version of gMapMaker.

Hi
Havent messed around with GMapaker for a while - just tried - seems to work better than it ever did. One thing I have noticed (not sure if they wee there before) are numerous faint water marks all over the created image - © 2009 Google.

Fair enough I suppose.

I've noticed those in GoogleMapViewer, they are not an annoyance like whole tiles being out of line and other glitches like a square of image being repeated right across the whole picture.
I may be demanding more than the program is capable of delivering given my hardware; I'm just not sure at the moment, and will have to run some tests with less demanding downloads and possibly across uniform pixel count areas of landscape to see how it behaves.

....actually I have changed my mind about GMapMaker - it has same issues as it did before - I did a rather large map at zoom 17 over 9 tiles. The last 4 tiles were all black - several of the others had bits missing. As you suggest less demanding downloads are more likely to succeed.

Cheers
