Hello
Good unit but would avoid unless it’s going dirt cheap (<$50). It is a discontinued model so support (parts/repair) may be an issue. No facility for upload or download of data to PC could also be a problem depending on current and future uses. You will have to manually load (type in) co-ords and same if you want to pass on/save waypoints externally. You will also not be able download track log data. Unit doesn’t contain any detailed mapping and you cannot upload detailed maps (e.g. DiscoverAus). There is no facility for eternal power – i.e. if using car you can’t use 12V power cord as you can with other units.
I personally wouldn’t recommend any handheld GPS that didn’t have
1. PC connectivity
2. Colour Screen (though greyscale OK)
3. SD card slot – for data or detailed map storage..though some of the latest handheld units have plenty of internal memory
4. Ability to use external power supply (e.g. cig lighter in car) plus availabilty of car/bike mounts.
5. Good dealer service (local).
6. Good availability of detailed map data either free or commercial products.
In my opinion Garmin is currently the pick of the bunch for handhelds. A few, possibly, better options in other markets (navigators and PDA type devices).
Cheers

if you can read a map you only want the coordinates to place yourself on it. Your magellan probably doesnt chew much batterry power and I think it takes the ubiquitous penlight batteries so you can carry spares without having to to charge from 12v or mains. Ask yourself how many maps you need before you go out and buy an expensive gps with built in maps. Oh yeah, the paper maps dont use batterys and together with the odometer and your common dog senses, they will get you a long way.

"the paper maps dont use batterys "
No - but the torch you need to read it at night does:)
GPS units and maps are both naviagation aids - neither replaces the other in all circumstances. Choose the
tools for the job at hand. Generalised comments that paper maps or GPS units are a better than each other are always incorrect and not very helpful, but thats just my opinion.
Cheers
