Daughter went with a friend to Cloncurry for a family Christmas/New year break. Arrived there and was greeted with hot, dry, dusty and water being trucked to the town as the local dam was a dust bowl.

Well, that's come to an end. Cannot get out of the town, flooding to the east of them, flooding to the south of them, and to the west of them. Barkly Highway closed for next 3 weeks minimum, so cannot get home to the Territory.

Just had a call from her, the river is rising through the town, and they are packing their bags and getting out of the house, as the water is through the back fence and up to the house.

Anyone else want my daughter and here friend to visit them?

I hope the family is OK. I suppose that this is one of those times when ringing the boss about not comming back from holidays is plausible. Matter of fact wish I had thought of it sooner - could have rung work from the mobile and have a few weeks off.

Kind regards

I was only looking at photos of floods out that way about 2 or 3 years ago. Ended up camping out the back of the Walkabout Pub for a night. Incredibly how slippery that black soil is too. Had to snatch a bloke across the road from the pub when he drove off the road to use the telephone box. We watched him trying to get out from the verandah drinking nice cold beer. This is after I spent about half an hour trying to clean my IPF spotties because when I pulled up at the Walkabout a patron noticed they were half full of muddy water. :)

THe interesting thing is how easy it is for us Australians to use the floods as a damn good excuse to not work. You wouldn't believe how many people were 'stuck' for days.

Unfortunately I had to get back to Townsville that day for personal reasons and found my way through back roads (development roads).
