Some of you will remember my previous post after blowing up my GU IV near Camooweal in NT a couple of weeks ago.

Nissan dealer removed head today and allowed me to take a photo. Every piston is cracked and #2 blew a hole (photo shows a bolt actually pushed into the hole).

Image Could Not Be Found

Dealer expects some answer from Nissan Aust tomorrow.

To all those that say post 2003 ZD30's are OK, look and learn. This poor man is proof perfect that those people are wrong.

G/day Malcolm, Mate for some interesting reading on this ever increasing nissan problem, Flick over to the AULRO landrover site quickley as there is some really interesting reading on a situation where as a landrover repairer has one of these engines pulled down, some very interesting facts coming out of it!.

Hope all works out.

Cheers Axle.

Thanks for the links Axle (and tks for all other replies so far) I will keep adding to my original post as things develop.

OT: Interesting browse on LR site. Saw reference to my old 1961 Series 2 Land Rover Ambulance (Reg # 108085) - well it really belonged to the army ;-). This was allocated to 2nd Field Ambulance in 1962 at Woodside SA. What a dog of a vehicle. Top heavy but you should have seen some of the country we put these things through up in the Gospers Mountains (NSW) during Ex Sky High.

I don't have any technical expertise but I have often wondered about the size of the motor compared to the size of the vehicle and the work people ask it to do. I noted with interest the comment in the Landie forum "The Patrol on the otherhand is a heavy vehicle with a grossly undersized engine that had to work far too hard." Given that the 4.2 Nissan gets so many wraps it seems a valid argument.

Agreed Colin funny sort of comment but thats life I guess.
We see plenty of not so nice comments on this forum also :-)

I think your project was a great concept, very gutsy and has offered people an alternative fix to the issue.
Better yet it turned out really well for you personally which is the main thing.

Malcolm C (QLD) - spoke with the local tow truck operator today who advised that he had taken two Nissan 3 litre with blown motors to a local Nissan dealer in the past week.

He also advised that one belonged to a doctor and Nissan was paying 75% of the repair costs. I have known him for a number of years and has no reason to stretch the truth. He also advised Nissan paid him both jobs.

**what are the symptoms of the pistons packing it in???

Big cloud of white smoke coming out of the exhaust :-(

Some of you will remember my Q about towing caravan direct from Normanton to Camooweal. Finally I heeded the forum advice and went down through Cloncurry and Mt Isa. Reached Camooweal without a hitch (however did notice a slight rise in temp gauge going up hill out of Cloncurry. Reached top of hill and kept going allowing temp to drop back down to normal). With hindsight that may have been a hint of things to come.

14km out of Camooweal (just across NT border - 100km/hr under load - sound familiar?) the dreaded white smoke. That was on a Sunday (NRL Grand Final). Caravan coming the other way also saw it, pulled up and said "Man your in BIG trouble". We managed to contact RACQ (who wanted me to ring NT associates "duh!!") on his wife's phone - both our Telstra phones DID NOT WORK!! Towed back into Camooweal by RACQ, then to Mt Isa where Nissan dealer wanted to charge me $15,000 for a new engine. RACQ did recovery to Townsville (after much standing our ground) BUT THEY WOULD NOT RECOVER THE CARAVAN. Cost us $200 to tow caravan from Camooweal to Mt Isa. (Gold/Ultracare member - didn't YOU know RACQ do NOT recover caravans or trailers!!) I then flew to Townsville and picked up my "old" (2003) Nissan Patrol (ZD30 - never had a problem with it for last 45K - now done 150K) back to the Isa same day and took next two days recovering caravan back home. RACQ took Patrol to Nissan dealer in Townsville who has now had it for the last week, without a word as to what is going to happen. He just submitted paperwork to Nissan to see what they are going to do. Still waiting :-(

The vehicle was previously owned by a local cane farmer, serviced by himself every 10K (he's a mechanic), and only reason he sold it was to get a Navara (also with a ZD30 engine). He's as shocked as I am. I did less that 2K before it blew up :-(

I'm not bagging Nissan, this engine or the vehicle. As I said, I already own one and it has been fantastic (towing the very same caravan to Adelaide and back a couple of times).

I've spent the last two weeks trolling the Internet and now have nearly 200 pages of documentation from patrol4x4.com.au and this site. I was waiting to find out Nissan Australia's response before posting but just wanted to reassure Laura that Nissan MAY come to the party with a reconditioned engine (you pay for labour). Contact your local Nissan dealer for a new engine.

In the meantime the "pearls" that I have learned is to fit an Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) gauge and a "boost" gauge. You will at least have some sort of warning system that something is / may be going wrong.

I will post further details once I know MY outcome.

I dont know that much about Landrovers but doesnt the Defender come with a 4 or 5 cyl turbo, and they have GVM up to 3500kg??
Wouldnt this be equaly overstressed as the ZD30 in a Patrol?

For the record I had a early ZD30 which blew the engine too - never again.

The point is its probably this particular engine not the power to weight argument.

Spoke with Matilda at Customer Service who told me to go back and get my dealer to submit again.

The service manager is at a loss as to what they want. He previously submitted copies of log book, photos of engine, history, etc. He's at a loss as to what they are looking for.

No, I dont, but your not the lone ranger with this issue.

I do know several other people who have tried, threatened, begged, parked their blown up cars in dealer driveways, and yes, they got nothing. I know 2 that traded theirs in before they even got it fixed (one was a warranty repair, but he didnt care)

Then theres the dozens of others I've read on forums that have tried, some get the joy of paying for parts, and free labour which still takes it in the ring for a known problem, so to me thats no win.

As said, couple of 100 grenade owners sticking together and putting a class together *MAY* work.. From their reactions to customer complaints, they dont care about publicity... This is one reason I think they has no plans for this car in the future.. kill it off with bad publicity.

How the hell can a modern diesel car only last an average of 50,000-150,000klms and people should be happy with that? and the issue drag on for 8 yrs.

Not having a go at you, it just dazzles me that-
1) its still happening
2) happening at such low klms for a modern engine thats 'taking them to the future'....

Go add yours to the list here ->

If you have anything to say I would urge you to say it NOW. Please NO BAGGING OF NISSAN. Please be constructive.

Hi Malcolm,

I am sorry to hear your problems with your ZD 30 Engine. As the vehicle is barely out of Warranty in time and kilometres I find it extraordinary that Nissan is so truculent

I spoke to my local Nissan dealer earlier today and he has not ever heard of 4 cracked pistons.

I would certainly press Nissan to to find why they have not offered to contribute to its costs.

I had a Holden that developed an expensive fault 3 months out of warranty, However they came to the party because I had documentary evidence that the vehicle was serviced and maintained by a Holden Dealer.

Any way keep us informed and I hope Nissan give you some financial relief.

What a joke that they think people believe those lines spun by the dealers, "Wow!! thats never happened/seen that before"

Malcolm here's my "list" that I keep updating about ZD30 blowups, it may save you time looking up other forums for people in the same dilemma as yourself.
It's over 100 now and only includes the dreaded engine blow up not any other issues.
There may be some double posting between forums but I delete them as soon as I am made aware them.

Very telling.

Would you have any idea (can you find out):
what percentage of vehicles sold the above constitutes in under 200k
how the figures compare with comparable 4WDs

Sounds like the basis of a class action may well be there - maybe time to talk to S&G?

Wow. As a GQ owner looking to update this is an eye opener.
I have been following this topic for a while and am amazed how big this problem seems to be and how poor Nissan's response has been.
Just on the point of knowing what is going on under the bonnet.
Most heavy trucks have gauges for egt's, engine oil temp, turbo boost, etc,
Most also have warning systems and auto shut down systems built into the computer if any engine readings get out of range.
The point is. This technology has been available since the mid 90's.
There is no excuse for sudden engine failure on this scale in modern computerised vehicles.
As a proud Patrol owner who has spent many a happy time dragging Toyotas out of the manure it is sad to see Nissan drop it's bundle in this way.
Good luck!

Looking at the idea (proposed by some) that the zd30 problems have been caused by excessive boost, don't the turbos have a wastegate?

After being reviewed by a Senior Supervisor at Nissan Australia the comment was "OUT OF WARRANTY" and an inference was being made that they don't have this sort of problem with that engine.

You are all right - I AM ON MY OWN.

Townsville eh?

It was in the Townsville SCT that I gave Pickering's and Mitsubishi a clean-up a few years back.

Truckster

That's what Nissan were also trying to tell me yesterday before I severed my relationship with them.

Just a follow up ....

Nissan Mt Isa told me #4 piston was blown. Cost $88. Later I found out that all they had done was connected to the ECU and "No errors found".

Based on "that" info Nissan Townsville just cost me $453.75 to tell me it wasn't #4 it was #2 with cracks in all others. They had to remove the head.

$7,500+GST just for replacement engine. Arranged for tow truck to bring home tomorrow where it will have to sit until I am fit enough to repair myself. (my lower back has collapsed due to nervous stress - I'm a TPI Veteran).

I have had a quote from Engine Aust ($1100) for a rebuild kit and my local Recon shop charges $50 per cylinder. They will also help me with the rebuild.

I still have a couple of tongs in the fire !! As John said to me (private email) S@@T on them from the top. It runs down hill !! :-)

FYI I'm a retired computer x spurt (software). I've now ordered an ELM327 OBDII I/F (overseas from China) and a small 8" notebook, via my local contacts (arrived today) which I'm now looking at developing the software specifically to monitor the ECU. I'll keep everybody informed on progress.

Hi Malcolm. I had the same problem this month and got the same reply from Nissan. I have my local parliament member looking into this but not holding my breath. I'm looking at other option rather than the 18k Nissan quoted me to fix the problem. SO what will be the total repair bill for you? have you investigated installing a 4.2 motor?

I did offer a way to get you blokes out of the chit.

0411 874406.

I don't like people being taken advantage of by big companies.

I don't charge anything, it's just friendly advice.

Jim.

Thanks Jim

I also left message ... I wasn't ignoring you. Other things have kept me pre-occupied.

My local Federal MP has been in the loop for a few days now.

An email to "A Current Affair" last week has gone unanswered - as somebody else said "scared of losing advertising income".

Vehicle was delivered home this afternoon - another $66 for towing!!. Will have to sit idle for a while.

In the meantime I'm talking with some computer colleagues to develop a "turnkey digital dashboard" so we will at least be able to see what is going on under the bonnet - as well as creating a log file to record past history.

This system has undergone major change in the last few years so Small Claims may not be enough as depending on which state you file the claim is what will govern the amount able to be claimed.

QLD appears to be only up to $7,500-
NSW appears to be $10,000-
Victoria via VCAT is a lot more.

You need to do a search for small claims in your home state to see what may or may not apply to your individual situation.
Also have a good look at the ability to claim costs as this has also changed depending on the amount of the claim and the respective state in which the matter is heard and can cut both ways.

Some court/tribunals will allow parties to utilise the services of legal representation so you may find yourself arguing without representation the case against experienced council acting for Nissan.

I would also point out that if you made a claim on an individual basis and some sort of class action was developed at some other point you would probably be precluded from entry to the claim if your matter has been heard and dealt with.

Don't let this dissuade you, just make sure you understand what you are getting yourself into as applicable to your state before you act.

Thanks John, appreciate your advice.

I think I'll let things "settle down" a bit for the time being. BUT I will not give up.

I think its well worth someone with this problem actually contacting one of the plaintiff law firms such as Slater & Gordon and at least having a chat with them.
It would probably not cost you anything other than your time and they would certainly be able to evaluate the prospects of the case.

I think the whole situation stinks like a rotten 3.0 litre engine and would just love someone to shove it up Nissan good and proper.

Good luck.

Malcolm, good to chat with you the other day. I have update the local memeber and referred him to Peter Lindsay as well. Below is the update on my thread.

Pat Farmers office has spoken to the office office of Catherine Cusack MLC, the NSW Shadow Minister for Fair Trading who have said they will look into the matter further for us.

Catherine office confirmed yesterday that this matter will be escalated on Monday 3 November 2008

Spoke to Jim yesterday and he was very helpful. I have passed the information onto Pat Farmer (Federal member for Macarthur) and I'll be following up the small claim tribunal option as well.

I also like the idea about collecting as much evidence as suggested by another member. I have a mate who may be able to start up a web page and record this data so it can be used against Nissan.

I will let you know of any developments. We may be able to attack this from two angles.
I can be contacted on 0418977601 if you wish to have a chat

Kind regards,

Ray
