In the past I have experienced the cruise control disengaging without me doing anything...didn't touch the break..nothing!

It re-engages when reset no issues...

Only happens now and then

Any clues as to why this happens???

Cheers

Factory or aftermarket?
If aftermarket, is it an AP50?

I wonder if the same people build the autopilot for Airbus aircraft or is it just a WA thing

I've had the same problem with my Prado. The Toyota dealer put it down to a connection in the brake lights, as this is where the switch is to disconnect cruise when you brake.

Would be my first choice of culprit too. It will be hard to fault-find because you cannot replicate the issue when at a standstill. I suggest you check (ie. unplug and spray with contact cleaner) every connector on the brake light circuits. Check the earths too, they are probably local to the globes.

You could be on the money here...I recently pulled my trailer connections apart because they were playing up...maybe I didn't put them back together properly..cheers

Andrew, I don't have a 100 series, but I have had a similar experience in a previous car and I suspect the setups are similar.

The switch that turns off the cruise control when you press the brake needs to be set just right, because if it is not when you hit a bump the brake pedal moves fractionally and pushes the switch and turns the cruise control off.

Hope this helps

And don't forget to check the trailer plug, a slight trace of corrosion between connectors is all it takes.

Hi there. Don't know specifically about the LC100, but I have a manual Prado (90 Series). The Cruise Control will, of course, always drop out (with a clunk!) if the vehicle is under load (eg uphill) and the system cannot deliver enough grunt in the gear you are in. Solution is to select a lower gear, and then reset Cruise Control. I have noticed this particularly when towing.
Does this help?

Andrew,

as a few suggested maybe the brake/cruise switch( i cant remember if it has a seperate switch for the cruise without going outside to look) and maybe the clock spring in the steering wheel has dirty contacts. does the airbag light stay on longer than normal or come on abnormally? or even the stalk on the wheel is full of chit and needs a clean out. if i think of anything else i will repost. Andrew,

Mine does this as well. The switch seems pretty sensitive as I only need to brush the brake pedal ever so slightly and the cruise control disengages. It will even disengage if I hit some corrugations on a dirt road. I'm thinking it may be controlled by a mercury balance switch or the like. A query on the LCOOL forum should provide a definitive answer.

Hi Andrew,
I have a 100 series with aftermarket cruise. Mine will occasionally drop out going uphill if the throttle opens up too much. Can't see a switch on the throttle but maybe it's inside the unit at the other end of the cable. I assumed this is to prevent undue laboring of the engine and forces one to swap to a lower cog under heavy loads (mines a manual). Note that this is all speculation as I have never bothered to investigate properly.

Cheers

My wife has a vectra, the cruise started turning off by itself. After numerous trips back to the dealer we told them they would have it until they fixed it. Turns out thet replaced all the computers and the one that fixed it was replacing the ABS computer. Apparently it is all tied in and this is what was causing it to turn off, never had another problem since and that was a few years ago.

Just a thought! Do you have a controller for trailer brakes?
I do, and have had the same problem with the cruise dropping out on my LC100. Turned out to be caused by the brake controller (Tekonsha Prodigy).

Sorry, its not a Prodigy, but a Voyager. Post 53373 talks about it a fair bit and there is a known fix.

The fault I've described only applies to the Tekonsha Voyager. The post I mentioned above (53373) describes the fix as being either a warranty replacement unit or a diode fitted somewhere.
I noticed that there was an audible click at the same time the cruise got knocked out. The click came from the brake controller and is the same click that you hear when you move the manual slider control. Also, once or twice I noticed the brake lights on when no-one was in the car! I have not fixed mine - just live with it. However, when not towing, I disconnect the controller at the harness connector.

Hi Andrew ,

My 100 TD Auto TD disengages when the speed drops below about 90% of what it was set at . I think the Cruise Control is saying "I cannot do what you ask so I am disengaging".

I am guessing yours always does it under load going up a hill .

I am used to it now , as it happens a lot when I am towing my van .

Cheers ,

Willie .

Hi Willie..

No, my issue is different. It happens at cruising speed on straight and level roads....that's the weird bit!

cheers

Willie, have the same sort of symptom. Do you keep your cruise control on much of the time? I was when travelling back a few months back but was finding our fuel consumption was quite a bit higher than a guy who wasn't using his cc. The cc seems to make it surge very hard at times. Love to soften the loud pedal on cc.

Morning John ,

Just turned on the puter to check what transpired in the US overnight .

Regarding cruise control :
If it is flat country , and there is no wind , I put straight onto cruise control . For me it takes the stress out of driving . Then I start listening to podcasts or an audio book .

I reckon you would get better fuel economy without cc on , because you would (if being frugal ) not try to maintain your speed up inclines etc.

Willie.

Mike, shuffling funds here to generate another. I don't think things are rational in the US. They are leaderless in the sense of the word and waiting for the election to see if they can take a clean break.

I think I use cc as much as anything to rest my legs with my feet under the pedals. if I didn't do that, the go pedal would be lower I reckon. LOL Imagine the fuel economy then ;-))

might not help, but Toyota 80 series cruise is hooked into the brake fluid level sensor aswell as everything else...if your level is close to low, the cruise disconnects.

Andrew,
If all the other suggestions don't fix it - Do you ever see your ABS warning light on? If so it might be the cause. Mine was coming on for no apparent reason after a trip into the High Country. Took the wheels off and gave them a good go with the Karcher to get all the grit out. No problem since.

I also have a LC100TD auto 5sp and find the CC harsh. Slight drop in speed on a gentle hill and the CC accelerates way too hard.

cheers

Alastair

No issues with my ABS light that I have noticed...

I know what you mean about the CC being harsh. Very disappointing in some respects these TD's and great in others.

I put a Dtronic in mine and it helps the issue noticeably... but still not brilliant.

Got a few dents in the panel work a few day back...and was thinking about suspension upgrades before that and other stuff...makes me wonder whether to go over to a D4D Prado auto???

But that's just more $$$$
