Gday everyone, I have a 6x4 trailer with a detachable canvas canopy here in Vic that I would like to tow to Qld with me on a working holiday and to visit family for 2-3 weeks. The trailer is unregistered here as I believe its not necessary to( please correct me if Im wrong). Will I be able to take it to Qld as is or do I have to register it first?
Regards Boris

If it is legally registered in your home state, it will be legal to tow it behind your Victorian vehicle in Qld (or any other state), as I understand it, but you will need to have appropriate plate for it.

If you were moving there, that is another question.

They dont have to be reg in Vic if under 200kg unladen;not wider than the towing vehicle as produced by manufacturer; not more than 3 mt long inc. draw bar and any load.

NSW - Registration is a legal requirement of taking a trailer on a public road. This must be undertaken once your purchase has been made and prior to taking the trailer on a public road.

NSW from memory provides a time limit of about 28 days for the unregistered trailer to be usedon public roads and same with Tasmania. I assume Vic offer the same thing.....

hope this helps a little!

As long as it is 100% legal in it's home State you are quite OK to take it anywhere.
Remember though, if you carry any sort of boat on it, it must then be registered.

For $38 I would get it registered and then you will have no problems with fines, insurance, cops etc. If you are worried about it now, you will worry about it the whole trip.

Trailers must be registered in Tas at all times. There is no grace period and you will be $150 out of pocket if caught.
You have 3 months to change to local rego if moving there permanently.

Once you leave Vic the trailer must be registered. Why haven't you contacted Vicroads and checked with them?

Thanks everyone, I called QLD Transport today and checked with them. Definitely needs to be registered to be on the road in Qld. I lived in Qld for about 10 years and it seems my step father was lucky not to get pinged in all that time for his unreg. trailer. The girl on the phone at QLD Transport was very surprised that the Vic rules are different.
Cheers Boris
