Came
home through fourteen 40-50cm water crossings in 7 km. (creek was up due to a foot of rain this month). Last crossing is just 100 metres from garage.
Troopy was then parked two days in gear with handbrake off.
When attempting to leave this morning, I shifted to neutral, switched engine on, and discovered I could not engage any gear. If i forced the gear stick forward (still not into gear) the car would edge forward.
Discovered that I could easily shift to any gear with the engine off. Therefore engaged reverse and started car in gear without clutch. It reversed and had to be stopped by engine switch-off. Then I engaged 1st gear and started engine with same effect.
This process fixed the problem - gear changes feel 'as new'.
Question - what was likely cause and how can it be stopped?
Cheers
Chris

Chris,
at a guess the clutch plate stuck to either the flywheel or the pressure plate or both!bit of a clutch ride and it will clean itself up.cheers Paul

Thanks for advice Paul and Phil.
Sounds like I should do an 'extended' clutch ride on the
hill to the garage once I've cleared the crossing.
Best regards
Chris

I agree...it was your clutch plate that got stuck

Clutch plate or pilot bearing is a bit rusted.
Try start the car in gear with the clutch depressed. It should start and release the rust but if the clutch is noisy or rough after a quick drive have the clutch and bearing checked.
Regards
Derek.

Thanks Derek
Youv'e given same answer - and I'm sure it's right - wet cool clutch allowed to rust into position over a couple of days. In my case, starting did not release it. No unusual noises. Could not move the gear selector with engine running.
Cheers Chris

It's a potential prob here whenever the creek is up - and suspect it's a good reminder for anyone fording and camping in the wet.
I learnt long ago not to leave handbrake on - or alternatively to dry brakes right out - after deep water, but this one took me by surprise
Cheers Chris

I often have problems getting back into 2WD out of 4WD- dunno if it internal or external linkage. A few swear words generally fixes it.
Also, the handbrake ain't worth a pinch of poo. Have it adjusted up all sweet, but within a few weeks it doesn't hold !!

and my mechanic says Nissan have moved to the same dumb-assed hand-brake design as tojo...
That is funny.
Mine needs cleaning out and adjusting every trip.

Its safer to put a brick behind the troopy tyre than to rely on the handbrake .
