travelled to
Boulia today, left our van elsewhere so we were looking for accomodation in
Boulia for one night... Information center lady said "everywhere is $100 for a nights stay"... i could not believe this so i went to the pub [next door to the information center],the lady said "$99 for a basic room, communal shower and toilet".....
Bye Bye
Boulia,we drove
home to our van without spending a single tourist dollar in
Boulia [western Qld],and,we wont be back...cheers... Rod

You drove to
Boulia i am sure you know how isolated it is, how far freight has to travel etc.etc.
I think you expect everything to be cheaper the further you go away from capital cities(you obviously haven't stayed in many motels in the last couple of years).

never stayed in a motel,we're vanners and we're doing the second lap of the big block. $30 to $50 for a onsite van or hotel room is acceptable in my opinion

its an excellent road, but weve booked our current van site for 3 weeks and thought we'd go look at the outlying towns, sleep over then return the next day.

I am surprised at this. I was in
Boulia at about this time last year and stayed in a very good motel for $75. I could have got even cheaper accomodation but having driven from Gem Tree in very trying conditions all I wanted was a good nights sleep. I though that this was a good price for what I got.

I'm also very surprised. We've always camped along the river, or caravan park, and found it to be a good little bush town.
Don't know much about Motel prices, so I can't comment. However, don't write off
Boulia and the surrounding area because of this.
Regards
Kim

Strike me mate as you said it is Western Qld. I was there last year and it was worth paying whatever just to say you have been there.

do you ppl honestly call $99 for a basic room with communal shower /
toilet good value?? How does freight affect the price of a basic room??? they dont freight in the room.....
even the van park was $99 for a on site van [according to the information center lady]...
like i said,we WONT be ripped off by backyard out of the way
places that are DOUBLE the price of anywhere else...
as for you ppl that think its GOOD value i might suggest your money wont last long neither will your trip...LOL
happy travels...Rod...

I think you experienced what the mining/exploration boom is bringing to this state. Lots of geophysical and geological surveys going on in that area at the moment and the company boyos will pay whatever for accomodation and meals. Good for the town, but maybe a bit tough on the traveller. There are often lots of spin off from this (expensive) work , bringing employment and money into the community long term and keeping business going, that if relying solely on the traveller would probably fail. Sure there may be a bit of opportunism happening, but do you blame them to earn a dollar when there are companies quite willing to pay that kind of money. Pity you didn't stop as the pub is agreat place for a beer and a feed with some real character and if you go looking a few interesting historical sites. Also have a look at Mt Isa to the north same deal exept (if you can find a vacancy) motel rooms are up bringing between $100-$150.
Cheers
A

Boulia Hey. A great place, a mate & myself stayed a couple of nights there back in 1993. We were tenting it & stayed in the local caravan park, the ground was so hard you nearly needed a jack hammer to help get tent pegs in!! In fact my mate tied part of his tent to the fence the ground bent all his pegs. LOL
It's probabley changed a lot since then. We have a van now & I want to take my wife there in the not to distant future, it was for me a great place to visit.

Barry,
Your not wrong there cause it is in Gods Country LOL
They have to make a living somehow, If he had paid 3 weeks worth of park fees somewhere else then why complain when another town charges $100 per night for a room.
Cheers Kev

to each his own gentlemen,if youre happy to pay then good on you. and YES it really is good country very similar to
Jundah where incidently hotel rooms WITH
satellite Tv is only $25 to $35 double per night.
Windorah i thought was a little pricey at $45 double [hotel room]...cheers... Rod

Rod, as I said before, I am quite surprised at what you were quoted by the info centre.
Before you start knocking us types who pay for a room in one town, you need to think about the number of times we put up a tent in a
bush camp before we decide on a night of 'luxury'. Stopping every night in your van is not exactly what I'd call hardship. Most
places I stop it's my tourer tent so the odd night in more palatial surroundings is very welcome and all within the budget I've allowed myself. Rates vary from town to town dependent on a number of factors which have to be taken into account
You're not from Victoria by any chance are you?
