Hi
I have a friend who has just bought a caravan and is getting ready to head off. He uses a sleep apnea machine at night to help with his breathing. This runs of 240 volt. Has anyone used these and can suggest how he should set up for when 240 volts is not available, ie deepcycle battery, inverter etc.

Thanks Kc

I don't have intimate knowledge of sleep apnea machines other tha I did camp near a guy a couple of years ago who used one and he had learn't by trial and error over the years that he could only run one, confidently (he said he just couldnt afford for it to stop working during the night) using a generator (he had a Honda from memory)

Hope this helps

I should have added that he also stayed at remote camp sites for multiple days so couldnt rely on battery power for more than 1 day.

My friend has sleep apnoea and he hires a unit from hospital or clinic.. He travels around all the time in his Coromal camper with the battery and 300V inverter without any hassle what so ever. Hope this helps.

Hi Kc - This topic comes up frequently on the Caravaners Forum, however as i do not have a need for these, i have not looked into the power requirements of the CPAP machines they use, and how bush caravaners meet these requirements. Might be worth flicking through the threads on that forum.

A quick search in archives found the following that may be of some greater assistance to you. Link SHort answer, yes it can be done. Best way is with an Inverter connected to your car battery. Shouldn't flatten the battery and it's easy enough to re-charge with a short drive. You can go to added expense of solar panel and Deep Cycle Battery but for occasional use I think that would be a bit of an overkill.

I have used a CPAP machine for the last 10 yrs and travel a lot in a caravan and camping out bush. I use a 150 watt inverter with a 300 watt peak for start up and can be bought for around $150.00. The caravan has deep cycle battery with solar but in the bush use one of those heavy duty jump start battery packs with cig lighter plug. That can be charged during the day using your vehicle or a genset and works well. Regards Nav.

A friend of mine that travels with us regularly has a 12 volt one which he can run for quite a few nights without charging the vehicle battery. Being 12v no losses associated with inverters etc and much less power consumption.

I am a 12V convert and bought the machine on this basis. Also works on 240V when at home. No problems with battery power and no extra drain from an inverter. This has never let me down on the 100's of nights out in the swag and the attitude of my mates toward me in the morning has improved markedly.

Do an EO search - reckon 'go_offroad' (who doesn't seem to be on this site any more) wrote something very interesting about it once. He's very prominent in the Vic 4wd community so might have some 12v advice too. cheers JD
