I have a current model Prado. Looking for Ideas on how to secure a rifle (during hunting on private property). It needs to be in a position that enables quick release.
We had a look at screwing a Troopy grab handle to the dash and securing it with an Ocky strap, but that didn't work.
The only other thing I can think of, is the pillar next to the drivers
seat but it would be a mongrel to fix and get to. We're now looking at internal overhead roof options.
PS I don't the money to buy a Troopy.
Regards
Kim

G/day Kim M,how many people in front cab?if you are on your own keep the fire-arm safe till you start to "harvest"!! then you need some-thing like the pros use ,attatched to the drivers door as a rest. Please make sure you point a loaded fire-arm out the window, I have seen a few holes blown thru the roof of holden utes from accidental discharge after driving over bumps. stay safe mate and have a good hunt. Thanks Keith
Normally it's either with a mate or solo. If the mate is in the car it's not a problem, however when alone, the rifle needs to be secured while hunting. The Sako has a bolt lock key which I keep on a chain around my neck.
That's all good an
well, but in a shooting situation it's not practical to use. I've been shooting for over fifty years now and
well aware of safety issues, but it's good that you reinforce that princlple.
Regards
Kim

My Humvee came with M16 mounts for each seating position ;-))
Basically all they are is a rectangular bracket on the floor to take the stock and what looks like a Terry clip (spring loaded U shaped clip) on the pillar to hold the barrel.
Maybe you could do something similar.
The 50 cal when not in the pintle on the roof in the turret sits in a bracket beside the front
seat passenger on top of the trans tunnel.

Gday, I have a 79 series ute, into which i installed an overhead console designed to fit a scoped (4-12 x 50)rifle. I picked this up on ebay, it was easy to install and keeps the rifle out of sight but easily accessible. The rifle is held in place with an ocky strap type cord which clips over 2 buttons on the front of the console and keeps it snug over any off road or corrugated track. Cheers

Gone are the days when you can just drill and tap anything, anywhere in vehicles.
Is there anything that you can hang out of the glovebox, and run the stock between the dash, and the steering wheel ?
Problem is that you would have to pad both sides of what ever you used so you don't scratch the shyte out of everything.
I have a D22 Twin Cab Navara, and I secure a gun bag on those "girly/sports bar", with an "ocky" strap, and slide in what ever rifle I so choose to take. Its safe, and dosen't harm the rifle.
It just sits there a treat.
Will work on the same theory for you.
Tell me please, do you get out of the cabin, to take a shot, when on your own ?
Cheers Bucky

Yes I do. I use to be able to shoot from either side, but the sight in my left eye is not very good anymore. The left was the side I preferred, whilst shooting out of the window.
Now all shots are taken outside of the car.

The G-lox product and similar is available from any reputable firearm store in australia and have been for some considerable time.
It is these products that I based my own, homemade units, on. I didnt mention them as I presumed you had already encountered difficulty, in trying to mount commercially available products.

Even with G-Lox I'm having trouble finding somewhere to secure the upper bracket on the dash.
I also rang Milford's to see if they had a cargo barrier that could be fitted behind the front seats. No luck.
Were going to pull bits and pieces off the dash over the weekend to find a bit of metal to drill into.

Kim.
Its been a while but I when I was shooting I made up a leather (thick leather) pouch (scabbard?)to house my 3030 Win.
I had straps on the back to allow me to mount the pouch in various locations.

An easily fitted fitted, simple, firearm mount in a modern 4wd in an anti firearm world.
And I thought I had high expectations........LOLOL
Used to be able to get brackets that fitted in the side window frames. Ran a bikelock chain through the trigger guard and every body was happy, even if driving the vehicle round
Canberra ( and around and around and around )
If you plan ahead for your feral cleanup trips, this should not be a problem - Hummer style mount on floor area, mounted off
seat bolts. Clamp for barrel on dash using solid mounting location. What screws are frame mounted in the glovebox ?
Barrel clamp could be quickfist or even the old style jack handle holders found on earlier 4wds. Go to wreckers with battery drill and drill out spot weld. Can be rivetted, screwed or welded as required.
System worked
well horizontally on 40series dash and vertically in Jeep TJ pass door opening. Expect scratching on barrel though.

Kim,
If you are still looking for gun rack ideas...(I'm a bit slow...!!) I have made an overhead console and also a dash mounted quick release cradle for my 'cruiser. I use the overhead console to carry the rifle to and from properties, (out of sight and secure) and use the cradle when shooting. Both of them utilise existing bolt holes, so they are easy to fit and don't destroy the vehicle, and this system doesn't damage the rifle or knock the 'scope. I could take some photo's and send to you if you are interested.
Regards,
Jim
