Thought you may be interested in some statistics from our 6 month trip around the Western half of the country in 2002. We left Melbourne on 13th March 2002 and by a circuitous route went to Perth, up the West coast Broome Kimberly Darwin then down the centre to Pt. Augusta across to Dubbo then Newcastle back home on 7th. September. We were in our 2000 Ford Explorer, and towing a 1978 Jayco Dove camper van. We still have them both. Anyway we were away for 179 days. Cranked the Dove up and down 54 times. Travelled 23,697 Kms. Used 3724 Litres of fuel, which works out to 15.7 Lts. per 100Km. or 18.2 mpg.Cheapest fuel was at Tintinara in SA on 13th. March at 83.9 cents per Lt. Dearest was at Drysedale Station in the Kimberley at $1.45 per Lt.Average price of fuel was $1.01 per Lt.Total cost for fuel was $3790.00. A similar trip now would have to cost around double that ammount.Anyway I was cleaning out an old drawer, and found those records, and thought I'd impose them all on you.We had one hell of a trip, saw some places I'd dreamt of going to since I was a boy. Wouldn't have missed it for quids, and we'll probably do something similar again soon. Cheers to all.

It is certainly interesting to keep records and compare them over time! Last August, we paid $2.29 a litre for diesel at Kalumburu - Drysdale was a bit cheaper. Fuel is not the only cost that has escalated in recent times, though, especially in the Kimberley. Camping fees can be pretty steep now, too. We noticed a huge cost difference for the Kimberley component of our 2007 trip, compared to the same in 2000.(I am not even game to compare those stats with the ones for our 1993 trip there!) All good fun - don't put off your next trip for too long.

Came across some old records that my folks kept of their travels in the 70's and early 80's. Spent nearly 10 years on the road towing a van and Dad kept a record of every cent he spent. Drove an old 3 speed petrol Toyota trayback and at about $18.00 for a tank of fuel, all he could do was grumble about the costs. Nothing changes you see. All relative to the times and the value of the $

Hi Roger,
Have you put together a Blog on this trip? I reckon you'd have some interested readers and obviously you can put in a lot more detail that you would probably if just creating a Forum post (if you felt so inclined). The Forum is better for recent stuff, or things needing answers. Blog better for reports, past history etc.
