When I got to check my HWS for the first time (1 month after purchase of 12month old van) found the anode nearly totally gone and the bottom on the tank covered in white calcium like deposits. I used my fingers and tried to flush as as much out as I could and after spending as much time as I could I reassembled with a new anode and dried my self off. The question is could/should I use some CLR in the tank to try and clean it or not?

Pull it out and remove the element, use a high pressure water blaster to remove the calicum. You won't hurt the enamel and much faster than anything else.

The calcium carbonate is an unfortunate fact of life, a yearly flush/clean should do the trick.

The anode is another story, they should last longer than 12 months, me thinks you have a grounding problem. Is the model a manual L.P.G, auto L.P.G or L.P.G/240v ?

Answer: LPG/240v.

I have been told an anode not likely to last 6 months depending on water quality. Am mostly in SA and the anode was looking pretty sick after 12 months.

Yes, that is true.

Is it possible to drain the tank when the van is laidup.

sounds like its doing what its supposed to be.....thats why they call them a sacrificial anode...they corrode away instead of your heater....depending on the quality of water its longevity cannot be determined...adelaide water wont let em last long
