Question, I am considering purchasing either a Magellan or Garmin unit for off-road and on road use.
I am particularly interested in available topographic maps. The Garmin has the benefit of free ShonkyMaps and Tracks4Australia, but I'm not sure if these maps provide the names of tracks (a feature I need). If instead I purchase maps for either brand of device, would these maps include track names.
Any info would be appreciated...

I've been using the Magellan Explorist XL for two years. Here's three attributes you may like to consider:
1. Topo maps from the Magellan programs, now loaded on my PC, are better than 1:250,000 topo maps in terms of basic topo detail - contours, tracks etc. This means I can plan, locate, enter waypoints, build routes, etc, all on the large screen PC monitor at
home & download onto the GPS for use in the 4 x 4.
2. Large screen of the unit is readable while travelling. You can drill down to very minute topo detail while out in the field.
3. Also useful, (however, a function not used by me) as a street directory - I assume like the 'newby' TomToms etc, but without a voice command.
Cheers

Hiya Guys
The street directory is pathetic in my opinion for the XL,especially comin from Magellan,Sure it will get you there,or there abouts....
No auto re-route which is a pain, use the extra $300 on a tom tom etc etc..
As they said above the TOPO is magnificent
cheers
