never owning a diesel motor before what would be a good oil to use in my toyota 2.2 litre engine

Any of the
well known brands of oil are good. They all probably come from the same refinery. The only difference is the additives that are used.
I use
Shell Riumlar X, it is a good oils and can be purchased just about any where in Australia. I try to avoid mixing different brands of oil.

When I buy a new car ( second hand) I always change them to HPR Diesel.
It works for me and my cars work hard.

I use Bridgestone A/T Duellers 265/75/16s and run them at 40 psi front and 42 psi rear. I won't run anything else.

Since we're on this topic, I would invite comments:
I have always used a proper diesel oil in the 4.2TD diesel Patrol and the earilier 4.2 Mav.
I have seen plenty of multi-purpose oils which meet both S and C specs ("suitable for petrol and light-duty diesel engines"), but have avoided them, preferring to stick with the more expensive dedicated C-specced diesel oil. I am currently using
Caltex CXJ for Japanese diesels.
Am I right to do so, or am I being over-cautious?
I suspect that a lot of service centres use the multi-purpose oil (they only have to carry one type of oil).

Modern diesels and low sulfur fuels demand a specific oil additive package, you are not being over cautious.

I just went and bought 2 x 20 litre drums of CXJ from Dunnings fuel here in
Melbourne. I called
Caltex yesterday to try and track down a distributer that may have had some left and they said definitely stopped production and no one would have any in stock.
Well, got 2 drums from Dunnings and they had 6 drums left. They looked it up on the computer and the computer says they are still able to order it, so there is some still out there.
The drum labelling had changed. Used to be the full colour painted drum, now it is a solid blue drum with a label attached.

Wasn't going to bite on this one but I will a little bit. Using a specific diesel engine oil is better used in older vehicles, the specific diesel oil has a bit more detergent to wash away the inherant cr@p you get in older diesel engines. Saying that, now that the diesel spec is now heading to 50 ppm sulphur and lower the diesel burns cleaner so you don't get as much contamiantion from the blow by because of the higher compression ratios of diesels. I use a full synthetic oil myself which is not cheap but neither is a new engine, so $90 every 10k for peace of mind is OK. I have one of the infamous 3.0 TD series one Patrols so I need all the help I can get, so far so good "touch wood". The comment about the same refinery and the addatives is true, anywhere in the world oil is refined the same way with the same end product it's all the blending afterwards that makes the oil good, better or the best.
I work at an oil refinery and have done for longer than I care to remember, not that this makes me right but I have an idea.
Other opinions may vary this is

bewdy martin --now i know what the difference in petrol and diesel oil is-----will definately use the top quality one in my motor " the old motorhome" 1983 engine has only got 156.000 ks and is the original.

If you want a Ci-4 diesel oil at a good price, I've been using Gulf Western TopDog 15W40. Get it in 20 litre drums from
Adelaide Truck and 4wd Spares on Regency Rd. Last time I bought it, it was $72 but that was early 2007.

If it's a second hand vehicle, I try to use what the previous owner was using, otherwise Penrite HPR.

Hello Kev, I have a great mate in
Adelaide who has several sealed containers of diesel oil. He is a very fastidious bloke, so it would have to be First Class oil.
He sold his vehicle, but still has that oil supply in his garage.

thanks for the offer dennis ---when i sold my old coaster which i had for 16 odd years had only done 125000 ks in all that time done one trip around
the block and thereafter use only for local holidays, this one is easier to drive and cheaper to run but dont want to blow the bloody engine up with wrong oil .
its not the ks i watch its the years its takes to do it lmao
