I had bought myself a Zodiac inflatable boat about a month ago and had intended to buy a 4hp Mercury outboard to push it along. The reason I was after a 4hp was to not have to pay rego.thus escaping having to have rego numbers defacing the boat as it is next to impossible to remove them in the future ( should this be necessary ). However a 6hp Suzuki 4 stroke became available at a very good price and I bought it. Does this mean that I now have to paint the rego numbers of the boat onto the inflatable and if so, do they have to be 150mm high as required in Qld?

If the motor is not sufficient to sustain a plane then the characters can be 75mm and on the stern only (or both sides if you wish), your choice.

If you're gonna paint the rego numbers on- make sure you use the correct paint !! Paint that will adhere to substrate (I assume vinyl)- and won't perish or melt the substrate !!
Check with your local sign shop- he may have a bit for you..

As one the largest supplier of inflatables to Surf life saving Australia if you do paint your Zodiac find out which fabric it is PVC or Hypalon, being a small craft it will probably be PVC & most signwritters carry banner ink this will last as long as the craft & can be removed with some effort, If it is of Hypalon you need hypalon paint which is hard to get & expensive, I import mine direct from the US

all states are 150mm lettering of contrasting colour

Vince, this is a quote direct from this website Maritime safety QLD)
http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/Home/Registration/Recreational_ships/

Quote:

Registration symbols
Your ship will be allocated registration symbols. These must be clearly visible in plain characters in a contrasting colour to the hull of your ship.
The size of the characters depends on the type of ship and must be able to be read from a distance of 30 m away

* ships not capable of planing must have characters a minimum of 75 mm high on both sides or on the stern
* ships capable of planing must have characters a minimum of 200 mm high on both sides
* personal watercraft registration symbols must be:
o displayed on both sides
o at least 100 mm high
o easily seen while the craft is underway
end quote.

The article refers to ANY vessel as a 'ship', including inflatables tenders although there is an interesting paragraph on tenders that may interest Bill13.

Dunaruna,

Thanks for that link to the Maritime Safety. I found it very interesting and shall follow that up with a phone call to there office.
Thanks to all others who offered advise. The stern seems the best option for me to place the numbers.

If you go to a sailmaker, they will cut you numbers out of the material that they use to apply sail numbers on to sails.
