Hello,

I have recently acquired a '92 turbo diesel Rocky from a great mate for the equivalent of 30 cases of VB. It has nearly 200 000 on the clock and is in good nick with many extras. A few years ago he was pulling into Longreach with his spotties on and his stereo blasting and apparently drained his battery doing it. The next morning he got a jump start and found the local auto electrician. The sparky said that the diode was burnt out on the alternator and fixed the problem for $400. It seems the alternator has once again given up the ghost and isn't charging. Daihatsu wants around $800 for a new alternator. or I can get a second hand one for $200. I've never owned a 4wd before, let alone a diesel.

1. Is changing an alternator on a diesel motor any different to a car?
2. Is there anything else besides the alternator that is likely to be buggered? (no coil)
3. Anyone dealt with a rocky alternator before?

Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

Hello Greenhousegas,

Generally the diesel alternators have a vacuum pump on the back and as a result are quite expensive. You may get a better price at an auto electrical place using an aftermarket alternator. I think I paid about $580 for an 80 amp alternator for my diesel cruiser ($700 fitted). Personally I wouldn't bother with a second hand one but each to their own. Maybe worth getting the system tested first to ensure that the problem is the alternator.

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave,

I got my mechanic to check it and he said that it was marginally charging and he could pull it out to send to the auto electrician for a thorough check. I was thinking I could take it out myself and send it over. I checked it myself by removing the negative terminal from the battery and the motor stopped. I've tested like this on my Holden and figure that the principal is the same for a diesel motor.

Green house gas.
Where are you located? The alternator will be made by denso or Hitachi or possibly mitsi if its the original. the $400 fix may have been a Chinese replacement. Se if you can find a brand or symbol on it. To do 2 alternators in only 200 000 seems a bit odd. Eric.

Hello Eric,

I checked the alternator and it is a Denso. My mate said it was the diode that had come away from the housing and burnt out so was replaced and the alternator is the original. I can check this for sure tonight. I am located in the ACT.

I replaced the GQ alternator the other day. Bought a new one(aftermarket) through my local garage and it cost me $420 plus a hour fitting charge of $66. Buy a new one. Shop around if you are in the big smoke and you should find one at a reasonable price. I think the brand name could be Exceed

Rocky's are great little 4bies and at 200,000 clicks its hardly run in!

Cheers

Hello Willem,

The consensus seems to invest in a new one. I'll ask around town and see what can be done. What about re-cond of the Denso?

Yes the Rocky is fun and should keep going for a few more years. Thanks
