Does anyone make a van with a drop down bed to save space-as done in some motor homes? The bed takes up so much space that could be raised overseating/table area thereby adding things like shower etc to a much smaller van,Would be a good idea I feel. Thanks,Mary

I saw a Jayco at the caravan show that had a lift up bed. It sat on the lounge at night and then when you pressed a button it lifted up into the ceiling and left the lounge. Would hate to be sitting on the lounge if the mechanism failed.
I also saw a bed that lifted up into the wall, which would be a safer proposition.
Hope this helps,
Micks Master.

Thanks-that's the idea.I would imagine there would be a locking mechanism to prevent one from being "brained " by the bed .Will check out the Jayco range

We had a 1980's Millard with a bed which folded up into the wall. SWMBO hated it because the bed had to be made every time it was pulled out from the wall. I normally got the job :-) Millard vans were made in Perth.

Thanks for the replies I agree that the fold up /have to make the bed type would be a real "pain"
If one could disappear a fully made up bed at will that sounds like the bees knees!

Hi Mary,

We had a Commodore Caravan years ago that had a double bed that folded up into the wall for day use of the area. I'm not sure if they still exist as a manufacturer but there are still s/hand Commodore vans around. Probably not all have this feature. I guess if you are buying new any manufacturer would incorporate a fold up bed for a price.
Just a word on practicality. In our case for the bed to fold up into its cavity in the wall, all the bed linen and pilloes etc had to be removed. My wife found this a bit of a pain - having to store this stuff somewhere and then remake the bed evry time it was to be used. Just make sure if you get one that you are happy with its practicality.

Cheers,
GPM

Gooday,
We have a Gypsy bed in our caravan, have an L shaped dinette on the left side, remove the table, pull out the panel beneath the seat & it makes a bed 7ft10in long & 4ft wide. Use the seat cushion & 2 bolsters made to fit the rest. Works a treat & very comfortable.

I was going to get a Phoenix Scorpion made and they were happy to make two bunks - the top one would have folded upwards when not in use .
Cheers ,
Willie .

Mary, we had Viscount Van with a drop down bed in the 80's. The bed had one seat belt across the centre and was folded up into the cupboard all ready made up for the next night, no problems. This gave the van a huge lounge area and we loved it. I am disappointed that they don't make this anymore. Good luck finding a good one.

Hi,
12 months ago we bought an Evernew van; at that time they had built a custom van with 5 bunks one end and a bed the other end. The bed folded up into the wall during the day to give a large living area. It was a fantastic arrangement. I suggest you go and talk to Evernew in Bell St Heidelberg.

Cheers
