Have been looking around for a reversing camera and screen for the Nissan. Tried to get some advice from a local auto shop (who stated that they'd fitted plenty) but couldn't convince me that they knew much or had a convincing solution to either question above.major problem is the spare tyre on rear door. I want it more to see behind when reversing (We have 3 young children) rather than for hooking up with th towball.

Can anyone let me know the best place and type of fitment for a camera for the Nisassan, and the location of their screen?

Thanks in advance.

Saw one on a Troopy (with dual rear wheel carrier) mounted in the top left corner of the driver side rear barn door.

This would be the same as mounting it just under the rear breaklight on the back door of the patrol.

This position appeared to work well for the Troopy and should be OK for the Patrol.

Thanks for that. I will have a closer look at siting it there.

Bundy,

I don't know if this set up would suit you vehicle. I have the roof rack on all the time so the camera is mounted there and has a good view of the rear of the vehicle.

The screen is mounted on the overhead console again might not suit your set up.

This has worked for me on two vehicles now and I find that is what I need.

The camera should be mounted on the out side of the vehicle. Looking through the glass is not that good.

A bracket off the spare wheel carrier might be the go.

No roof racks unfortunately. I'm looking to siting it under the door handle near the number plate.

When I had my "ordinary" GU, I (like Wayne), had the camera mounted up on the roof rack, angled down so I could see the towbar as well as being able to see about 15 meters to the rear of the truck.
A mate of mine has just fitted one to his GU too. He doesn't have a roof rack. Instead, he took off the "U" shaped towing/recovery (?) lug off the back step and made up a steel plate with 4 holes to match the pattern, welded on a length of 40mm square box section (about 70mm long)......enough to house the smallish, round camera. Note: that some camera (mine included) are like Wayne's ......more rectangluar and with infrared LEDs etc.; but my mates is one of these smaller ones.

He has just run the cable for the camera up over the top of the aluminium step and then up through the rubber grommet in the bottom quarter panel (underneath where the jack resides).

As for the screen, I have one exactly like Wayne's and I mounted mine where the normal rear view mirror used to be. I used the original mounting system, so it is as safe as the normal mirror (IE: it will break-off if something/one hits it in a collision). However, my mate has one of those screens that clips on over the original mirror (these worry me a bit, cos I reckon they will eventually be too heavy for the ball joint on the back of the mirror and will fail to stay in the desired position.

On my current dual cab GU, the camera is mounted at the bottom of the steel box.

Roachie,

Have you given any thought where you will mount the camera and screen when you get the 200 Series?

Bundy,
That would depend on where you ultimately decide to mount it. Let's assume you find a convenient place that doesn't require any (or too much) surgery to the bodywork. Running the cable through to the front could take an hour or so. I did mine up through the headlining after going up the "D" pillar on the passenger's side. I removed the plastic cover strip on the passenger's side "A" pillar.

Also depends where you decide to mount the screen....mine is where the mirror used to be, but some people mount the screen in the dash where the radio should be etc.

Overall, it would be best to allow the better part of a full day (just to be on the safe side).

Cheers

If you look very carefully just above the number plate you can see the camera lense

This is the screen - I do not have a 'normal' rear view mirror - just the camera and screen

Hope these help

Kiwi,

Where did you get your overhead console? It looks like a really well finished unit!

When I had mine I put it on the inner end of the number plate and the spare tyre didnt intererfere at all.
I have a Polaris M35 with a mini camera and I ran the wires thru the door loom and thru the door handle hole. Run it from outside as camera wont go thru hole.
Gave a good view of the towball and about 100 meters behind. Found a camera with infrared to be hopeless as the colours washed out in daylight. When reversing at night the brake and reverse lights give enough light to see by.
Had a dropdown screen mounted on console to left of mirror.
If you mount camera too high and point it down too far you cant see back very far and I found as above to be ideal.

Graham

Sounds like you ran the wires yourself...not too difficult even for a clutz like me? Was the camera the one with the two screw down points or the bullet style? Can I confirm mthat your screen is mounted on a roof console (which I don;t have)?

Thanks

It is the little minicam with two ears for screws and I just used a pice of alloy and screwed the camera to it and it to the inner end hole on the number plate.
Take the door trim off and run the wire thru by the handle and thru the loom in the bottom corner and under the trim to the front footwell. The Polaris system connector is about here on the end of the screen cable
The reversing light wire is in that loom and someone can probably tell u the colours as I dont have the nissan or a manual any more.

U can fix your screen to the windscreen to the left of the mirrorSo it drops below it when in use if u like or right in the left upper corner
Depends on the screen I guess I had the Polaris CM 35 which is a little 90mm fold down one
As here http://www.polarisrearvision.com.au/
go to products CM35B Same camera newer screen .
mine has a cable to connect two cameras as I have one on rear of van as well.
Also have a switch so I can use it while driving to keep an eye on whats behind me.
Can Pm u the diagram if u want it.
Not hard to do just takes an couple of hours by the time u take the trim off the A pillar etc

I ended up mounting mine just under the brake light inside the door. The "theory" was that seeing as we get the car dirty quite often and use the camera when reversing in the bush if it is dirty I can just hit the rear wiper to clean the glass where the camera looks through. Only been in for a couple of months now so still experimenting but visibility is good, from about 0.5m to 15m behind the car. Camera image is displayed automatically on Car PC screen when reverse is selected.
