Hi all,
Is anyone able to recommend some specific 4WD's tracks in the
Grampians?
Am looking to do some at Xmas time, but will be in a relatively low-clearance 4WD.
Have lots of maps, but after some info from people who have done specific tracks within the park.
Thanks

The Victoria Range Track should suit you down to the ground.

Jamey,
A few good tracks would be Ingleton track(went along it last w'end and was in good condition),Mt.Cassel track from Redman Rd to Tunnel Rd(a bit steep but a good track),Chinaman tk near Lake Wartook,
Moora tk and Rosea tk have some terrific
views(need to
check with Parks Vic if their open).
Happy to give my mobile if you email and can talk about local tracks more or call in when you arrive here and can go over the tracks in detail.
Cheers
Tony

Thanks for the replies.
Tony - I appreciate your kind offer. I'm curious about the Ingleton track you did - according to the map I have "
Grampians National Park - Road & Touring Map" (put out by Parks Vic 2005), it says the Ingleton track is for management vehicles only! Is that still the case?
In regards to the other tracks you mentioned, which ones would you consider OK for a relatively low clearance 4WD? (Suzuki Grand Vitara). Will be happy to stick to some easy ones this trip.
Are you familar with the "
Wallaby Rocks Track" that runs off Asses Ears Road? We did that one in the Suzuki a few weeks back, and it coped OK, but some more clearance would have been good at times!
Thanks again for your help.
James

Jamey.
Yes i think your right about Inglton tk. being for management purposes although my map doesnt specify that track. The gates are open so i presumed the track was open to the public.I will
check on that one with Parks.
I dont think Mt Cassell Tk would be suitable to Your Vitara.
Goat Tk and Victoria Range Rd would be ok.
Cheers
Tony

Tony, is Mt Cassell Track rough, steep, or what? I guess I am interested in
Grampians tracks but they have to be good to beat
the Pyrenees which is only the same distance away for me. Last time I was around the tracks in the
grampians was just after the fires.

John.
Apologies for taking a while to reply,i have been away for acouple of days.
Mt Cassell track is a fairly short and steep. It is a bit rougher on the N.E.side of the range. There are a lot of good tracks throughout the
Grampians. Most that are accessible are not that challenging but are a good scenic drive.
Its certainly worth a trip here now especially to see how
well its recovered since the fires.
I've not had much of a look at
the Pyrenees but will have to make a trip of it soon.
Regards
Tony

From Another Grand Vitara owner (2000 5 door V6 ) you should have around 200-210 200mm of clearance as standard a little less if you drop tyre pressures. That's just as much as any older landcruiser or GQ with their crappy saggy springs, get out there and enjoy plenty of gnarly tracks.
The grand vitara is a genuine off roader and its despite being 1000kg lighter than some other tucks going around its certainly no "lightweight" when it comes to off roading!
I love the
grampians :) you will too!

Thanks for the replies again everyone.
Osher: Nice to hear from another Vitara owner. We have used ours off-road a couple of times so far - up near Mt Hotham and also in the
Grampians in November when we did the
Wallaby Rocks Track.
So far we've found it to be very capable, but the clearance at times is obviously limited and we've scrapped the bottom on a few rocks. None the less, we knew what we were buying, and are very happy.
We are looking forward to doing some tracks in the
Grampians over Xmas.
Thanks again for all the track suggestions from everyone too.

What year is your grand vitara? I hear the new model since 05 onwards has clearance isues, an easy fix would be
suspension lift or if you want to go a little further some good grippy of road tires like cooper ST's they aren't to noisy on road and make the world off difference especially if you get slightly taller than standard tyres.
Either way go the G vitaras :) great fun on sand too :)

Our grand vitara is the 2006 model. We bought it fully aware of its clearance - we just need to be more selective in what tracks we choose, which we are fine with :) So far we've enjoyed it alot. I actually find it's quite nice to drive around town too.
We have a baby one the way too, so won't really get a chance to do much to it until funds recover!
Ive managed to put the
Grampians tracks into GPS so we shouldnt have a problem finding the one's we want.
