Hi all,
This is a qusetion for Bundy as his internet is Down. What is required to replace the rb30 petrol with a 4.2TD in a gq patrol? If you can get the engine for the right price is it worthwhile doing? Will transfer case, gearbox, diffs all be the same? Thanks
Matt

Probably cheaper to sell and re-buy.

G'day Matt

When i had my RB30 GQ a few years ago i looked at doing the same , gearbox, radiator, tail shafts and transfer case from memory are all different , im not sure about the diffs , you could prob use them , just dont know how different ratios would be ....anyway for me it was too expensive an excrcise so i didnt bother , i ended up buying a 4.2TD GU instead.

Cheers.......Dave

diffs are diff- erent too...what about putting vl injection on the rb motor then gas, or putting a v8 in there on gas?? the easiest way to put a 4.2td in would be to buy a wreck and transplant then sell off parts

G'day matt,
Ive been enquiring about doing a v8 conversion and the gearbox in the rb30 is not strong enough so u'll have to pair it up with the 4.2 gearbox. diff ARE the same! If in doubt call mark 4wd adaptors in vic they'll help ya.

G'day Greg

When i rebuilt the gearbox in my old RB30 GQ i had a problem locating some of the needle roller bearings in the box , and then actually found out that the internals are identical to the box in the Turbo VL Holden Commodore....would have thought that they would have been gutsy enough to handle a V8...unless of course youre talkin a worked 350 Chev or similar??? But that doent mean i doubt you mate..just my opinion.

Cheeers......Dave

The diff size and strength are the same, the ratio's are different, the RB30 has 4.3's and the TD42 has 4.11 ratios.

Why stuff around with and underpowered diesel ?
A 5.0 lt commodore eng will cost $2200 from a wreckers with warranty and all bits needed for conversion, about $700 for turbo 700 auto.
A decent eng conversion place ( try The 4wd Workshop in Frankston) should be able to do the conversion for around 5 grand.
Not only a much cheaper conversion but better off road with auto, more bottom end torque than diesel, the diesel doesn't even get a look-in in the outright power stakes, and all for around the same, if not better fuel economy.
And remembering also that diesel is 10-15 cents dearer than petrol lately.
