AT tyres on Camper trailer?

This may appear to be a totally stupid question but I just have to ask; Is there any advantage in having AT all terrain tyres on my trailer instead of the usual light truck tyres? "Live today as if there may be no tomorrow"

Mate, the advantage is to have the same rims and rubber as on your fourby so that you have, in effect, lots of spares.Chris

I have same stud pattern on my off road pop top as Cruiser. Only difference is I have 285/ on cruiser and 265/ on trailer all being A/T.
I do have one spare for trailer and two for Cruiser though.Counting the sleeps!!

Not only would you have the same wheels/tyres on your car and trailer, you'd have the axle setup so that the trailer has the same track width as the tow vehicle.

Not only spares for the trip, but also you have 7 - 8 wheels/tyres to rotate to put off the evil day of replacing them. But of course when the evil day arrives its a lot of (expensive) rubber.

In terms of towing performance, the short answer is 'No'
However you can run two different sets of tyres - Four rims and tyres for offroad work - two on the trailer plus two spares - And four (or five) rims for on-road/sand or just around town.
I usually leave HTs on the car and STs on the trailer + spares, then swap over as necessary. Minimises the wear and tear on the more expensive tyres.

We're running Cooper AT's on genuine GU Patrol steel rims on both car and trailer. Main advantage is that all are interchangable not just in an emergency but everyday use. My husbands rotates tyres between car and trailer (including the spare).

Have set up my trailer with same rims and shortly will have same tyres. Can I ask what order of rotation your old man follows. I have 2 spares on cruiser and one on trailer but that one will be for dire emergencies only and won't be involved in rotation until I get a better spare.
If anyone else can help that would be great.

Hi Allyn,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but I kept forgetting to ask hubby what his rotation order was. His answer...no particular order! The GU's have a very sensitive wheel alignment. It is diffiuclt to get the alignment right in the first place and it doesn't take much of a bump to throw it out. Even though we have it done regularly, there is still a tendency to chop out the front tyres. Basically, Greg is rotating the front tyres with the trailer and the rear tyres on an as needed basis.

Haven't been able to devise a scientific method and think I'll just run my front two down to an acceptable trailer level (it's not a camper trailer just an OR job) and then transfer them over, fitting new ones to front of fourby.

I have the same rims and tires on my camper and fourby.
So in essence I have 4 spares for the vehicle if the worst comes to the worst.
I chose sooper St's. I will rotate all of them so get extra wear. Don't put tires on your trailer that your wouldnt put on your fourby. Youll pay in the long run.

not a stupid question, i run two sets of tread all terrain and desert duellers and rotate between trailer and 4by run desert duellers on car for city driving and aon trailer and swap as needed , duellers are cheaper and handle
well on a trailer. Col
