Hi all,
Plan on doing the walk up to Ritchies Hut from 8 mile
camp in the High Country. Can anyone tell me how strenuous it is. Last time I was there I noticed the sign said 4 hour return. Was going to take the folks along as
well but I don't want to kill them or anything!!
Thanks in advance.

I've done this several times - I would say that 4 hours is perhaps a little
short. Especially if you want to do some fishing up there. Difficult to convey
how strenuous it is - but you are basically following the river so not too difficult.
There are some sections which take you a hundred meters above it which
afford wonderful
views.
I believe there are actually 2 tracks - one which sticks on the river (& there
are several crossings which are better suited to horses than humans). The
other as described above.
After rain, the final section before
the hut may be a bit soft - but nothing too
bad.
Have fun - it's a wonderful part of the world!

G'day Rob,
Thought I'd just post an update. Did the trek to Ritchie's hut on Saturday. Was a bit worried in the morning because some really low cloud came in, but by the time we'd had lunch etc... it cleared to a perfectly clear day which made the trek very enjoyable. As you mentioned there are some stunning
views along the way. It was also good to see the river up a fair bit following the recent rains - we certainly need it.
Lovely spot - recommend it to all.
Cheers.
