Permits for South Australia

The following information is provided to assist you in gaining the right permits to lawfully travel through or access specified regional and outback areas in SA.

We are planning a trip next year and were hoping to take in Surveyors General Corner along the way. I understand it was closed to public for a long time but was made accessible via a permit system. I am having problems obtaining the information needed to get the permit and have emailed DIA without any response.

I was hoping someone would be able to advise what the current permit status is and if you are still able to access to area. If accessible who do I contact to apply for the permit.

Any help appreciated.

You can access Surveyor generals OK and the permit application is made on-line. The $100 fee is paid at the township when you arrive. I posted this earlier this year

"if you search the forum you should find the answers you need as I posted full details several times earlier this year. You can obtain the permit on-line via WA Gov DIA website. You'll also need one for the Great Eastern at the same time. They usually take a couple of weeks to email the permit back to you.

Once you get down to Wingellina, just go straight to the general office (centre of town past the basketball court and he store. There they'll take $100 per vehicle and $20 per person, issue you a receipt and get one of the local elders either Mr Ferguson (Donald) or Mr Eddy (Whose land the corner is on) will accompany you down.

A good idea would be to ring the office, or if no answer, the store, a day or two before you arrive just to make sure someone is there. If their in the middle of sorry time for a funeral for example, there could be no one about for weeks.

I hope to do Mt Davies Road next year but permits for the top section are hard to get. You'll have to approach it from the GCR as no permits are being issued for the Giles Mulga Park Road west of the station where you turn north to head to Curtain Springs (Can't recall the name) and also from Wingelina to Warburton via Blackstone. It's in and out on the same track from the GCR."

I rang the arts centre in Watarru earlier this year and spoke to a knowledgeable guy (he's been there about 12 years) who has done the road about 2 years ago.

As you can see they even have a pic of a welcome sign on the web site for Watarru.

Be prepared to make your own tracks and repair a few tyres.

I would suggest making a few calls and get some names of approachable people in the communities.
When you fill out the permit, don't just send it by itself.
Add another cover letter suggesting your route, why you want to go their (the arts and culture is a good idea) and also mention some of the people which have said they would love to have you come through to visit.
