Hi,

After trying really hard to decide which tent we should buy we have ( I think) decided to buy 2 RV5 Oz Tents ,with the side walls, so that we can join them together. We just dont feel the one is quite big enough for when we stay for more then a few nights. If we plan to go away for just a night here and there, then we will just take the one tent.

Is there anyone out there that has two of these tents and uses them joined? I have seen how quick the tent goes up, but have not seen the side walls etc attached. Can anyone tell me how long a set up of 2 tents and side walls would take?

I have looked at getting the large Black Wolf Twin Turbo Lite tent, but dont really need a tent that big when we stay for short stays.

It's a lot of money to spend on a tent so I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

Opinions from families who use the same would be greatly appreciated!

I own a RV5, but have never joined it with another, however I have bought both the sides as well as front panel and all you have to do is mate-up the zippers and pull, couple more poles, couple more ropes & pegs.It takes more time putting accessories but you do it a few times and get into a system
Just make sure you buy the proper joining panels and it will be a simple job that should take no more than 10 mins for both tents depending on many pegs & ropes you feel you need.
If I'm only stopping for a sleep and its not windy I don't use any, Cant use front awning however if your only there to sleep you wont need it anyway.

Hi

we've got two RV3's and joined them together the other week to see how we'd go...after a bit of problem solving it took about 15 mins..but I would imagine it would get quicker the more we did it. Fantastic amount of room in the complete set up..

We have a trakshak camper trailer also, though we are going to sell that and downsize to a hard floor camper for us and we'll take one oz tent with us for the kids on longer trips..but for short trips we decided that the two tent set up would be the best option. After using an Oz tent we were sold on how fast they were to set up. We looked at getting the new RV5 which is the biggest one..but after looking at the size of an RV3 and weighing up the options we decided that getting two tents was the better option as it gave us more flexibility..and we weren't all shoved into one tent. By joining the two together we've got one tent, the kids - aged 6 & 8 have got one and there's quite a large area in the middle.

As long as you can transport the Oz tents I reckon they're the way to go.

Hi,

Thanks for that.

Do you have to have a pair of sides attached to both tents or can you have 1 pair of sides and attach the two tents together? Hope that makes sense?!!!

My husband would like to know if you can set it up so you have the two tents with a side panel each along the back side, so the front area has no side panels, but is covered by the awning and has wind break from behind with the panels. Just so you dont feel so enclosed in the middle section. That probably doesn't make sense either!!! Hope you understand me!

Do you put your kitchen, esky's etc in the middle part?

Do you have any photos of the set up?

Thanks,

Melissa

Hi

we've just got the two tents, so haven't experimented, though we do have two sets of sides, I think we'd probably put them up like in John's pic below for a quick set up, but on a longer stay we'd join up the two tents with both sets of sides.

Kitchen would be outside unless the weather was really foul..I"ve always cooked outside, inside would be used for an area for the porta potti during the night, and possibly to sit in at night..and some storage...fridges are in the vehicle.

Hope that makes sense...lol

what state are you in? if you could see them set up it would be easier for you.

Hi Lyn,

I am in the ACT. I have seen the RV5 set up, but without the sides etc.
I have 3 small kids 2,5 & 6. Our set up at the moment takes us about 2hrs. Way too long with the kids. We never get to go away on short stays as it's too much effort.
My thoughts are that the kids are still a bit young to camp in there own tent. So, I will sleep in one with 1-2 children and my husband will sleep in the other tent with the other child/s. As they grow older, I can move them into one tent and my husband and I can have the other.

So, do you put anything over your kitchen set up or just have it all out in the open? I am so interested in how other people do things and set things up. What type of kitchen set up do you have for when you camp?

We normally have a screen house that has our kitchen, esky's, food, but I want to scrap it as well if we get the Oz Tents with the middle section. I would not cook in the middle section of the Oz Tents but was thinking I would use it for food preperation, esky's and food storage.

It's such a big expense purchasing the two tents so want to make sure I am buying exactly what I need.

Thanks for your help,

Melissa

We decided the RV5 was a tad more work because to get the extra room you peg it out.but the RV3 didn't require the extra pegging as the room was big enough for a queen size self inflating mattress and room for a bag or two at the end.

I have always set up a kitchen outside, I have camping kitchen stand thing that folds up into a smallish bag..I set this up when we set up camp and I have a box of pots etc that just sit outside the tent...we cook either using butane stoves - I've got a couple or on a camp fire...either using camp ovens or hot plate for bbq normally outside the camper I"m under an awning and I'm not sure how I'll do it with the tents..I'm sure I"ll work it out...we also have one of those quick up gazebo things so might use that as well for an extended camp somewhere..I think you can get quick up screen tents which would be ideal and I know others who use these.

If you give Oztent a ring they should be able to give you a distribtutor near you and you can go and check them out, which is what we did. We had borowed an RV3 prior so we knew the space in that, and went to check out an RV5 thinking that the 4 of us would sleep in it, but then decided that we'd go the two RV3's as it was a better set up and the distibutor told us that quite a few people are doing that.

Our cruiser is getting a camping box for the rear tray, that will carry the tents, the fridges and all other camping gear...at least that's the plan...

hope that helps a bit..happy to chat more..I think if you click on the rig pic you'll find our email addy.

Just my 2 penneth-my wife and I used to take 2 tents away with us; a 2 roomed for long stays and a 2 person dome for o’night. We decided it was just too hard lugging the 2 and bought an el cheapo ($69) 3 person tent. We find that with a large ground sheet (we always use one) it is sufficient for short and long stays. We leave the fridge and AGM battery in the car now – we used to take it out and put in the tent. We just position the car alongside the tent and run the power through to it from the car. But we cook on the tailgate so having the fridge in the back of the car is fine. If the flies are bad we get everything set up ready for the night – we still use a queen size air mattress. I put a sheet of ‘lino’ down in the tent (makes it virtually impossible to have a prickle come through the floor-it’s queen size but cut down the center for easy packing) and then an old blanket over that- it gives us some protection from the cold ground and it’s nice under foot. Then the chairs and card table go in. We can then prepare our food ‘fly free’ after having a read and a fizzy drink. We either eat in the fly-free tent or outside if the sun’s going down. Of course if it’s a fly free environment the chairs and table go outside the tent for the evening. After dinner the table and chairs come out and I blow up the air bed ready for the lie down.

If we are at a place for a few days, I still let the air bed down so we can escape from the insects inside the tent during the day if we’re there. It doesn’t take many minutes to blow it up at night and I’ve got plenty of battery power to do it.
If it’s a balmy night we dont bother to put the fly over the tent – you don’t have to. I rarely peg out the guy ropes – only if the wind picks up of course. The fly has rubber rings at the corners so I just hook them under the corners of the inner tent-no pegs needed.
Sounds a lot of trouble but it’s not really and for $69 and a bit of organisation we find this set up is flexible enough for quick over- nights and 3 day stays.

Sorry this is a bit long winded!

Happy days
Geo

Gday

We have 2 RV3's and our kids (12 and 10) use one and wife and I use the other.

For quick stays we just put them close to each other and that's it. For longer stays we connect them together as you mention with sides and the gutter piece between them and it is still less than 15mins.

More often than not we put the sides on our tent and butt the kids one up against it. This gives us privacy to change in the middle etc but without the large footprint of the whole deal. Pic is in my gallery.

cheers
John

Hi John,

Can you tell me about the photo in your gallery. Are the tents set up with the side walls in this photo or do you just have it butted up?

When you set it up with the side walls and join the two tents, do you need side walls attached to each tent or do you only need one set of side walls? I am unsure if I am required to buy 2 pairs of sides?

Thanks heaps,

The photo in the gallery is how we set up when travelling most days like recently doing the Simpson...ie. no sides and not connected, just close together.
We only bought one set of 2 sides and 1 end and actually only use the 2 sides and butt the kids tent up to ours....
I have a photo of this set-up I'll try to attach ...
Dont worry about the wrinkles..we hadn't adjusted it after a windy night

cheers
John

Thanks John, That looks great.

I'm wondering what would happen if it rained? Would all the water run down the awning onto the other tent?

I can hadly work out which tent is the one butted into it! Very cool!

I have the RV4 for three of us and it would fit a another kid easy. We set up with two side panels and the front panel. We then lift up the front panel to use as an awning so front panel is fly screen. We then butt the Oztent kitchen screen room to the front edge of the awning. Works well for our needs

Yes, your right. I'm probably asking some really silly questions. LOL :) It's a big decision spending $2500+ on a tent. I need to make sure I am buying the right set up for my family and it's hard when you cant see one set up in the way you need it.

Thank you to every one who is helping me and listening to me babble :)

I might go have a beer now and see if that helps. He he

We dont have problems with the rain, we just have the bottom edge of the awning pushed over the top edge of the kids tent.... it often rains and we have had no big dramas.
