Sway Bar

Was talking to a mate today (Okay Okay an associate) and he was asking about a system that dis-engages the rear sway bar without unbolting it. I seem to recall driving a Nissan petrol (a few years back) that had a lever inside to dis-engage the rear anti-sway bar. Any info on which model Nissan this would have been and any ideas on how to set one up after market would be appreciated.

GQ Ti's and some ST's had it in the early models.

setting one up would be a PITA really, get the mounts and crap off a wrecked GQ maybe, but why bother, just toss the swaybars and never look back. My GQ didnt have em for years.

"just toss the swaybars and never look back"

How would you go with insurance in the event of a claim???

I ask this as it seems now with my lift the sway bar is limiting wheel travel, how did you find the on road handling with out it?

Cheers stefan

Hey Stefan,

Have tried mine with and without combinations of both front and rear sway bar. Hardly notice effect of front at all, on or off (probably due to longer springs). Rear makes a noticeable difference (improvement) having it on, but didn't cause horrific drive conditions without it, for the few months I tried it without it on. Currently run vehicle without on the front, and with on the rear, but with extended chassis mounts to the rear sway bar.

As to legalities, they are fitted from the factory to provide improved handling, and as with most mods away from factory standard it is probably frowned upon and or illegal. Keep all the original bits in case they have to go back on.

Ross.

I'd get on fine with the insurance company in the event of a claim.. Plenty of people I know (most GQ owners I know) have not run sway bars for years. some have had a few accidents, no issues, but every case is differnet... I didnt give a bleep , mine was engineered without them...

If you dont notice any difference offroad without a swaybar, then your car has issues. Mine gained a few inches more travel without them.

the tip, keep them for hanging plants on.

Oops,

should have clarified, on road handling wasn't made worse, but as Truckster said off-road the removal of the bars improved articulation a lot.

Cheers,

Ross.

My GQ has them, won't work very well if you have anything more than a 2" lift

Thought about putting that mechanism on my Gu (Overseas GU's have an electric version) , and got all the parts but it only releases about 30mm of travel and didn't think it was worth it.

However while near the best , Patrols still benefit from more travel , so I kept my standard springs as they flex more than after market and removed sway bars.

After doing lots of tests ended up with rear permanently removed as best option backed up with adjustable shocks which in part compensate for road sway at speed.

Hi Blaze

There is a couple of companies that make quick disconnects but they nearly all rattle, as far as sway bars with lifts I put on adjustable mounts on the front and an extension on the rear and all is good.

Have fun
