Going to
Cape York in July and request any information on secure caravan storage in
Cairns or
Cooktown. Any assistance greatfully received.

Hi jimbo. There a few storage areas at Smithfield just north of
cairns. Not too sure how secure they both are thought. One is a site near the James
Cook University; don't know the name of it, but it is undercover. Have seen a few
off road caravans parked there from time to time. Try this link; it may be what you could be after. The weather here is PERFECT. Kevin

Kevin if you wish you can store your van at
Lakeland , which is the end of the bitumen if you are going to the Cape via
Laura and you pass through there going to
Cooktown. I contacted them last week on this subject as we are heading up there again towards the end of next month and they charge $25 per week for storage without power and the Managers/owners live on site so it is pretty secure.I have also tried to get an answer from Mt Carbine as to whether they still store vans. They used to do so and didn't charge if you stayed there in the park for the night before you left and also on the night of your return. I will give them a ring tomorrow and will post another reply to you when I get an answer.
Happy travelling.

Hi beachbum. I think you meant to leave the reply for 'jimbo'; I live here in FNQ at Clifton Beach. An easy and convenient stepping of point when we begin our trip around Oz. Life is good here in FNQ. Kevin

Two years ago we left ours at the
Mareeba Rodeo grounds(six others as
well) for four weeks,no charge if you stay the night before and the night you return.
They are put down behind the caretakers house, don't know if they still do it probably worth a ring.
Regards Ronnie

Jimbo I thought that I had replied to your request yesterday but stuffed up and actually replied to another poster. You can store your van at
Lakeland which is at the end of the bitumen if you are going to the Cape via
Laura, for $25.00 a week with no power connected or $36.00 per week if you want power connected. There are resident managers on site at all times. I also have been in touch today with the Manager at Mt Carbine which is a bit further south than
Lakeland and they store your van for free if you stay a night before you leave for the Cape and a couple of nights on your return. They charge $2.00 per day if you want power connected during your absence. Their nightly rate is $16 for two persons. We will be leaving our vans at Mt Carbine for a month from late July. I prefer this option rather than drag the van up the range between Mt Carbine and
Lakeland and also have been to
Cooktown previously and have no need to stay there again but it is certainly worth a visit.

As said,
Mt Carbine caravan park, you will not find nicer managers than these guys. They do a free bush walk every afternoon-even if you're the only one there. Felt like we were leaving the van with family (better ;-)
