I use second hand 35AH gell cells from gophers.

They are changed out as part of the servicing routine and most scooter places will let the second hand ones go cheap. I got two for $50 recently and they run my Waeco just fine. (a mate got two for $0 from a place in Gawler, but he is always doing things like that to annoy me.)

Regards

Peter

My business before I retired was selling Mobility Scooters. The best used batteries to get are ones that have been in golf scooters (not golf carts), because they have to be replaced when they won't do a full 18 holes, whereas batteries in footpath scooters are replaced when they won't get the user down to shop and back. I used to test used batteries for how many amp.hours were left in them, and sell them for between $0 and $30. (The only way to test AGM batteries is by using a deep cycle discharge test, which most scooter sellers can't or don't do.) Some Scooter people will give you their old batteries for nothing.

Try Scooters & Mobility, Scooters Australia etc.

NOTE: GelCell batteries are not the same as AGM batteries. GelCell are more finniky in their charging requirements, but will last a lot longer from new. Secondhand, there is probably no difference, because they are all secondhand because they won't get the scooter owner out and home again!

BTW, I've made a simple deep cycle discharge tester. I bought a VoltMinder from Derek Bester ( Affordable Batteries & Radiators - see Directory) and take it out of the vehicle to test batteries. I've set up 4 21W tail lights in parallel. These discharge a 12v battery at about 6.6A. By setting the voltminder alarm to go off at (say) 11v, you can multiply the time taken to get from fully charged down to 11v by 6 or so to get approximately the amp.hours in the battery.

What he said!

I have bought 4 so far after reading about it on here (of course).

The first two ($25 each) the chap load tested for and they ran OK until I killed them with a cheap charger that I forgot about overnight. They still run lights for days, but are only so so for the fridge or laptop.

The second two I bought from a different place that deep cycle tested them as Fizz described ($25 each again). They are nominally 34AH and running the fridge without charging will deliver about 25AH each to 80% discharged. This is fine as I have a solar setup that will replace what the fridge uses each day in reasonable conditions.

As Fizz implies a good charger is needed. I use a CTEK for bulk charging and at home I leave the two good ones connected to one of my panels through a solar regulator.

You pays your money and you takes your chances, but I found if you let the bloke in the shop know what you want them for they will look after you.

$100 was not a bad investment for all the batteries I need, and the size makes them easier on the back to lug around.

Cheers

Pete

Can you post the link to the e-bay seller that you are looking at
