In 5 weeks we plan to head across The Plenty Highway and I just noticed that it is closed at present. What I would like to know is when it is closed does it close for just a few days or does it close for extended periods? Any info on this would be appreciated. Jim

Crystal ball question. Will depend upon further rainfall, etc which no-one can accurately predict. Suggest you have an alternative route planned JIC.

Has there been further rain there ? Talking to a local in Boulia last week and they said it was definitely open, as they'd had a tourist bus across.
They reckoned that they'd had all the water they were getting...and told me I was silly for thinking otherwise.

Wonder how come its closed. The info from the NT DPI says
Plenty Highway Between Stuart Highway Intersection and Queensland Border
High Clearance Only Changing Surface Conditions Unsealed road with rough conditions
Maybe roadworks or more rain ?

Suggest you phone a friend at the appropriate time :))

G'day guys,
We were looking at the same route in a couple of weeks, but have made other plans. If it rains while you're in the middle, you're stuck. This time of the year that is highly unlikely, but but there's been a bit of late rain and we only have a limited time, so we just can't afford the risk. You're talking July ..keep your eye on this site, I don't reckon you'll have a problem.

Hi jim,

just checked out the racq and dpi websites. The road isn't listed as closed - it's just recommended for high clearance vehicles due to being an unsealed road with rough conditions. I reckon that warning is probably on it 365 days a year! We did it in mid-April (just after it re-opened) and yes, it was rough, there were washouts, and there was some deep wheel rutting, BUT is was certainly passable in a reasonably decent vehicle.

Its enough to give ya the irites! They will say its closed even when the only water is across the river and is only a foot deep. Depends on how the local copper feels I suppose. We were told impassible, dont even think about, etc etc, but had a dream run and washed the tyres in an easy crossing. They like to leave it "closed" for a myriad of reasons, long after it should have reopened.
The best idea is to talk to Tobermoray, (really good people there), they will tell you if the bus has gone through. We will be coming through in about 5 weeks so if you're stuck, we'll help drag you out :)
