Just a quick question, what is the best time to head to the cape? And how late in the year is too late to head up there? Is it crowded up there also? and are there heaps of other vehicles on the roads to pull you out if you get stuck cause I don't have a winch!
Thanks
Joe

I'd go now, and you only have to
check this
forum out to see how many are going to be up there this year.
Cheers

Joe May & Sept are good times to go to avoid the Peak. June July could see 200+ cars a day so the dust &
campsite crowding can get annoying particually around school holidays. There's not that much 4 wheel driving on the Cape & in the rare instance you couldn't get yourself out you wouldn't need to wait long for assistance.
Cheers Craig.......

We were up there in May and had it virtually to ourselves. There were enough people around so we weren't on our own but it was not crowded.
However, the downside was that it was a late wet season and most roads were closed or simply impassable. We were at the tip on 25th May and were the second group to get there. The previous year people were at the tip for ANZAC Day.
We could not get across the Pascoe, or into
Somerset or anything else on side roads. The OTL was almost totally impassable. It was drying out and some of these
places were opening up when we were on our way south but we had run out of time.
This was in the days when you had to ford the Wenlock. It was 4m deep when we were there and we used a hand pull barge to get across. There were a lot of people in
Weipa who refused to use the barge.
Weipa was crowded but north of the Wenlock was like a ghost town.
Just something to consider. We still had a great trip.

Hi Bluey221 ! You should be there now really, but I guess it also depends on what the current weather season did. We also did the Cape in 1989 with Scotty and Mary-Anne (Mary-Anne's birthday is on this Mon May 28th..Remember the party, dance act we had for her at the Wenlock, while building the raft) If you like some adventure it is best to get there soon after, but not straight after the "wet"..Have reasonable mud terrain tyres,shovel,2 snatch straps in a bag you'll use as a "air break" if one breaks, only take a high-lift type jack if you have a good steel bar front and back (forget it later in the season).Must have a good
UHF radio with quality antenna, suggest Polo/Polar as it is reputed to have better range than those big, long white ones on bullbars. Leave
home with the attitude that you are going to have fun, then you will. Sadly, they built a concrete
bridge so that part of the adventure is gone forever. But still an adventure we all should do. I have to do it again to see the changes made incl the
bridge.BOL.!MPG:11!

Hi Rocky,
That is not hte raft we used but it is similar. We were there in 1999. To get the Trak Shak across we had to put it behind my mates Discovery because the overall lenght of the Patrol and the Trak Shak would not fit on the barge.
As it was the front of the Disco was just on and the TS wheels were also only just on the barge. HTe backof the TS was hanging over the back of the barge. It was a lot of fun.
Like you I would like to get back up there to see how much it has changed and to get into all those
places we missed last time.

Bluey, We were there last 2 years up to start of November. Any time outside the wet is a good time to go. You'll find the roads are more corrugated the later you go up, from the traffic chopping the roads up.
The people we've met are generally willing to help if you need it. As a matter of fact, if I had'nt got myself bogged in some sand last year, we would not have met the couple we are travelling with this year.
As apposed to a previous post, I believe there is plenty of 4WDing. Maybe they mean on the main roads.
Have a good time, I know were going to.

G'day signman,
we might be heading up that way about that time. See you on the track and hope we don't need the winch assistance!
