Don't expect a big rush of answers to this post Unless there are more than one Mt Davis roads in SA.
A quick search for another post
(not so quick really, I find it a bit hard to even find my own posts)

I did start out looking at this road but quickly found it was not for me with three girls in the vehicle. I reckon it would be a good trp for a bunch of blokes though.
I ended up going from Wingellina down to Illkurlka Roadhouse via the business road, this road is in unbelievably good condition and not bad scenery either.

Yeah I too would like to go that way some day but getting a permit might be problematical as it goes through Sacred Mens Business country.
I found a track off the AB last year after passing the Mt Davies track turn off, which back tracked to the Mt Davies track. Fresh wheel tracks petered out after a couple of km. At that spot we found a brand new solarpowered rain guage. So remote. Wondered who in hell was going to come and read it and how often. Anyway I drove down this track for a while. It had not been used in years and I believe that the Mt Davies track isnt used all that much either. Might be a tad overgrown.
Cheers

Rob,
I travelled this road 12 months ago. It is virtually abandoned and very overgrown from the
Anne beadell Highway to Coffin
Hill, which is 200 kms. From that point on it is a graded track that goes to Watarru and then on to Pipalyatjara, which is the old Mt. Davies
Camp in the NE of SA. Permits are required from the APY council, as most of the track traverses Aboriginal Land, and they will not be issued for this area. Special permission is also required, apart from the permit, as the area around Coffin
Hill is particularly important to the Anangu people in the area. I had a permit as I was employed on the APY Lands at the time, and sought special permission from an elder I knew
well. It is very unlikely without this relationship with a local you will get permission. For the record, the area is very desolate, huge sandhills (described by Len Beadell as the worst he encountered in all his road making) totally overgrown (causing vehicle damage if you are unprepared) and navigation is difficult due to kilometres of the track at a time being overgrown. Unfortuantely, it won't be long until this is one of Len's lost roads.
